Profile Paragraph:
Van der Merwe has a fine rugby pedigree: he is the son of former Transvaal player, Oupa. Van der Merwe, a fearless, yet silent workhorse, made his big breakthrough is 2007 when he was selected to represent the Emerging Springboks at the IRB Nations Cup tournament. He went on to make his Springbok debut in November that year, in World Cup-winning coach Jake White’s last Test in charge. He continued his good form in 2008 and during the 2009 Super 14. The 2009 Currie Cup saw Van der Merwe sustaining a serious injury which put him out of the game for a few months. Despite his absence, he was still selected for the Springbok touring squad for the end of 2009, where he played in the two club games of the tour. 2010 may be the year that sees Van der Merwe adding to his Test tally and really establishing himself as one of the best props in South Africa.
