As fish populations around the world are dwindling fast, the situation in Europe is catastrophic - fish stocks as well as the fishing sector are in crisis.
With over 70% of fish stocks being overfished, and iconic species like Mediterranean Bluefin tuna on the brink of collapse, it is time for dramatic change. Fish are a part of delicate ecosystems that provide food and income to millions of people and also help to regulate our climate. But irresponsible fishing is fast emptying our oceans and seas.
With the reform of Europe’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) underway we have a unique opportunity to stop the scramble for fish and start managing this precious resource in a responsible and smart way.
A growing number of society’s voices – from fishermen and processors to retailers and consumers – are looking to the reform of European fisheries to turn the depressing trend of overfishing and waste around. We call on EU leaders to sail a new course and secure a future with more fish instead of no more fish.
