The short biographies have been compiled from a number of sources available at the Edmonton Public Library. These sources, noted with each biographical entry, often contain other biographical data and can be consulted in the library if more information on a particular person is needed.

| | | East, Elisha Born in Bolton, Ontario, in 1879. Came to Edmonton in 1910 and entered the contracting business. Was president of Alberta Social Credit League and founder of Alberta Avenue Community League. His brother James East also served as alderman. They were the only two brothers to ever hold seats on the Edmonton City Council at the same time. Began work at age thirteen in sawmills and on farms. Later worked and prospected in Black Hills of South Dakota, then New Mexico, Colorado, New Zealand and Australia. Left Australia in 1906 and came to Edmonton in 1907. Prospected in Yukon in 1911. Enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916 and made twenty-five trips on hospital ships Araguaya and Letitia. Demobilized in 1919. Ran many times, unsuccessfully, in federal and provincial elections as a Labor candidate. Ardent monetary reformer. Died on June 23, 1940. Started his career in furniture business. Was employed by W.W. Arcade in Edmonton. Also owned a funeral business, a motel, an oil drilling rig and an engineering business. Owner of the 7D Ranch. Served as chairman, Royal Alexandra Hospital. Member of the Edmonton Exhibition Association, Yellowhead Route Association, and various travel and tourist associations. Member of the Masonic Lodge and Central United Church. Married to Ethel. Moved to Edmonton in 1895. Edmonton's first architect; designed the first brick school. Played "a prominent part in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the town." Member of the Old Timers Association, Masonic Lodge, Sons of Scotland, and Knights of Pythias. Educated at King Edward and Queen Alexandra elementary schools and Strathcona High School. B.A. and B. Ed. from University of Alberta. Worked for C.P.R., salesman for Robin Hood, teacher and principal of Grovenor School. Served as president of various teachers' associations. Belonged to the United Church. Married to Dorothy. One son. Died on September 18, 1967 while driving home from the City Hall. Apprenticed as a printer after receiving public schooling in Ottawa. Ran a printing office in Ottawa from 1902 to 1913. Came to Edmonton in 1913 and established Esdale Press, then the largest printing firm in western Canada. Managing editor of The agricultural of Alberta, published monthly by Esdale Press. Member of the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Edmonton Board of Trade, Edmonton Club, Rotary Club. A Liberal in politics. Married to Annie Maye Armstrong on June 1, 1898. Ten children. Sold his Edmonton business in 1927 and moved to Winnipeg where he started the Esdale Stationary and Printing Co. Attended public schools in Hamilton, Ontario. Graduated from the University of Toronto in 1897; afterwards studied at the School of Mines at Houghton, Michigan. Spent fifteen months mining in Mexico. Business manager of the Winnipeg Telegram, 1900-1904; with Manitoba Land & Investment Company, 1904-1906. First came to Edmonton in 1906 on his way to prospect coal seams on Pembina River. Returned to Edmonton in 1907. Managed the Pembina Coal Co., 1907-1908, then became financial agent. Formed the H.M.E. Evans Company, Ltd. dealing in bonds, insurance and real estate. Manager and director of various other companies, including Revilon Wholesale Ltd., and Acme Co. Ltd. Anglican by religion. Member of the Rotary Club, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. A Conservative in politics. Awarded Order of the British Empire on July 2, 1946 for meritorious service in war work. Married to Edith Isabel Gifford Jackson on September 17, 1910. One son and four daughters. Educated at Sunnybrook, Central Collegiate Institute in Calgary and at the University of Manitoba where she studied arts. Active in the Liberal Party; served as president of Young Liberal Federation of Canada (1953-1955), secretary of National Young Liberal Federation (1956-1959), president of Alberta Women's Liberal Association (1958) and later secretary of Alberta Liberal Association. Served on the Board of Governors of CBC. Active in community affairs and politics. Member of the Presbyterian Church. Married Art Evans, newspaper columnist, in April 1962. Worked for Alberta government, 1953-1956; process controller, Chemcell Ltd. (now Celanese Canada), 1956-1974; executive director, Edmonton and District Labour Council, 1974-1984. Active trade unionist; former president of Celanese Local; president of Provincial Council; vice-president, Canadian District of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union. Served as director, Boyle Street Community Services Co-Op. Elected NDP member of Alberta Legislature for Edmonton-Beverly in 1986. Re-elected in 1989 but defeated in 1993. Married to Wynne.
