Introduction
Last update: nd of May 2011.
The introduction is what is at the start of a book and is the last part written... so this introduction will follow the rule and will eventually be written... a few years from now... but the links below are ok...
The pages of this site give access to:
- the flora (quite partially) of the plants around my area, i.e. the town of Rosemre, 25 km North of Montral;
- an English to French dictionary of botanical terms, sorted with the
**sort -df**
command under LINUX; - a glossary of botanical terms. These pages were started at my retirement, the 1st of January 2005, and I will carry the job on for as long as I can, that is “until death do us part”. You can link to the plants of this flora, by:
- Their family, e.g. Asteaceae, Ericaceae, Orchidaceae, etc.
- Their genera and species, e.g. Cypripedium acaule, Rhododendron canadense, etc.; and you have to know the scientific name of the plant. or by some other regrouping:
- Some wild orchids that grow in Qubec (that is nothing but a link to the Orchidaceae family).
- The carnivorous plants that grow in Qubec (that then links to the few families of carnivorous plants of my area).
- The threatened and vulnerable plants of Qubec.
- The weeds and other noxious plants of Qubec.
- The toxic plants of Qubec.
If you do not know the scientific name of a plant but only its common name or one of its common names, you can scan the list scientific names vs vernacular namesin order to find its scientific name; this name is in boldat the start of a line, followed by its tabbed list of common names (at least the ones I knew).
Remark The scientific names of plant have changed et do change at times, due to the progress of taxonomy. You might then know the scientific name of a plant under an other name that the one used in these pages. You can scan the list scientific names vs synonyms in order to find the scientific name used in these pages; it is the name in bold at the the start of a line, followed by its tabbed list of synonyms.
If you are only interested in photographs of plants:
- click the genera and species link above;
- then click on the link for the species you're interested in;
- then go to the bottom of the web page for this species, where are the thumbnails for the gallery of pictures for this plant;
- then click the thumbnails.
