Introduction
Stut Theater (Utrecht, The Netherlands), is a professional theatre-company. Stut Theater facilitates with its qualifications and skills in drama and theatre-making the production of stage-plays with residents of ‘working-class quarters' in the city of Utrecht , the fourth city of the country. And other social groups that likewise have no or very little access to facilities to express themselves through drama.
These plays are based on experiences, stories and attitudes of these residents. Stut Theatre has developed its specific concept and method of ‘community based theatre' in over twenty-five years of its existence.
These play's are performed before audiences in the neighbourhoods from which these stories originate: again, the popular neighbourhoods, in social centre's, youth centres etc., but also in the regular theatre-circuit. Both in Utrecht and other city's in the Netherlands , in areas and neighbourhoods where these plays are expected to fit with themes and practice in everyday life.
The residents of the working-class areas are the players of their own stories, the performers in their own plays. Their audience sees honest, sincere and authentic performances with a variety of strong emotions and humour.
Started in 1977 Stut Theater made over the years some nighty-six original plays in which hundreds of residents in the Utrecht quarters played, a multifold of them contributed with their stories.
