Tom Herman joined the Rice staff in 2007 with a reputation for engineering high-powered offensive attacks, and his first edition of the Owls reinforced that notion as they smashed nearly 40 offensive records and Jarett Dillard, Chase Clement and James Casey earned individual accolades.

Over the last seven games of the season, the Owls averaged 374 yards passing and 496 of total offense, and set school season marks for completions (311), attempts (526), passing yards (3,517), touchdown passes (29), total offense (4,848 yards), first downs (279) and points (377).

Prior to joining David Bailiff at Rice in 2007, Herman directed the offensive attack for him at Texas State. His last two Texas State squads led the Southland Conference in total offense and the 2005 team ranked eighth nationally in scoring.

They went on to make a deep run in the NCAA in the team's first ever Division I-AA appearance, while Barrick Nealy finished fifth in the voting for the Walter Payton Award (top offensive player in Division I-AA).

Prior to Texas State, Herman coached at Sam Houston State, twice sparking the Bearkats to Southland Conference championships and the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

In 2004, they finished 11-3 and advanced to the Division I-AA championship's semifinals. The Bearkats' offense was ranked second nationally in passing offense, averaging 358.5 yards, while the Bearkats' 471 yards of total offense ranked fifth among Division I-AA schools.

In his first season at Sam Houston State, Herman coached Jonathon Cooper who was named the NCAA Division I-AA Wide Receiver of the Year. Herman produced all-conference receivers in each season and produced three All-American wideouts.

Prior to joining staff at Sam Houston State, Herman served as a graduate assistant coach at Texas where he worked with the offensive line as well as the defensive and special teams scout units. While at Texas, Herman coached two All-American offensive linemen and an All-Big 12 kicker.

Herman began his coaching career working with the wide receivers at Texas Lutheran in Seguin.

He also dabbled in media work early in his career. He worked in televison as a sports production assistant in Oxnard, Calif., a highlight coordinator for Fox-TV in Los Angeles and a producer/production assistant at XTRA Sports Radio in Los Angeles.

He has also managed training sites for Adams Course Texas which educates athletes on off-season workouts and directing the development of athletes' personal goals and leadership skills.

A member of Mensa, Herman earned his B.S. in Business Administration from California Lutheran in 1997 where he was a cum laude graduate. He was a Presidential Scholarship recipient. At California Lutheran he was an All-Southern California Athletic Conference wide receiver. He also earned a Masters of Education from Texas.

Herman and his wife Michelle are the parents of a daughter, Priya Nicolette Herman (4) and a son Maddock who will celebrate his first birthday this fall.
