John Barton
John is a hard-working and upstanding resident of Emmerdale. He loves his family and always wants to do right by them, although sometimes his fierce pride and quick temper can cause friction. He's certainly no soft touch and has had run-ins with a few villagers, but ultimately he’s respected by most of the community.

History
2009
- Arrives in the village with his family to move into Butler's Farm
- A furious John locks Aaron in the barn after he catches him playing with a lighter amongst the hay
- Arrested by the police for the Aaron incident, but subsequently charges were dropped after Moira pleaded with the Dingles on his behalf
2010
- John is worried about the amount of dead lambs and snaps at Hannah
- John is furious when Adam confesses about the chemical spill, as it could threaten the farm's future
- Throws Maisie out after the drug incident
- In a moment of weakness John kisses Eve whilst dropping her home
- Finds out Holly has been thrown out of college for drug dealing
- John and Moira are concerned when drug-addicted Holly goes missing
- When Holly returns, John threatens to try heroin unless she stops. His threat works and Holly starts to recover from her addiction
2011
- Declan informs John that he wants to sell the farm but John refuses to leave. John promises to make the farm into a profitable business so that he can buy it from Declan in two years
- The financial outlay of turning the farm into a business puts the family under enormous pressure and John and Moira's marriage starts to suffer
- John is devastated when Cain reveals he has been sleeping with Moira. John tells Moira he wants her out of the house.
- Cain ridicules John in front of the whole village, goading him into a fight. Adam later finds John walking down the side of the road with blood on his hands.
