Great Small Works
CWT presents two performances by the acclaimed puppet company Great Small Works, their most recent work, The Rapture Project, and a family performance including Lyzer the Miser and Our Kitchen.
The Rapture Project is Great Small Works' newest production, inspired by classic Sicilian-style marionette theater. The company uses the miracles of the puppet stage and original live music to tell its own stories. The Rapture Project examines the phenomenon of religion in American culture and politics, using the Rapture/Tribulation as a narrative frame. Now more compelling than ever, this theme has led the company to scenes with Muslim squatter punks in Buffalo trying to redefine Islam for the 21st century; an abstinence-only sex counselor meeting Christian tour guides in the Grand Canyon; Susan Sontag admonishing the Devil with passionate engagement. What does it mean that so many American citizens believe in the Rapture, believe that acts on earth are irrelevant to the ultimate ascendance to heaven? The Rapture Project is Great Small Works’ venture into the rough-and-tumble, glorious and tragic world of marionette theater in order to make sense (as much as that is possible) of today’s world, in which extravagant visions of faith add outrageous color to a globalized humanity already mixed up about and obsessed with politics, love, honor, and religion. The Rapture Project is intended for adult audiences -- nothing racy, just sophisticated political content.
Great Small Works will also perform matinee performances for children and their families of Lyzer the Miser, a table-top show for all ages based on the story by Isaac Bashevis Singer. In classic Singer fashion, a poor and clever family tricks the rich and greedy miser into parting with some of his riches, and teaches a lesson in generosity along the way. Our Kitchen is set in a kitchen where the cabinets open to reveal scenes that demonstrate where the ingredients for making pancakes come from.
