profile

Alex "Joker" Hall was a superb rover and half-back who played in the four Essendon Association premiership sides between 1891 and 1894.

He was Essendon third top goalkicker in 1898 and booted four goals in one game.

Hall was a great personality and his nickname "Joker" became well known to 'Sporting Globe' readers as a columnist in that newspaper.

He played with Preston in 1901 before he rejoined Essendon for another season.

Hall went to Essendon "A" in 1904 and 1905 before playing one game with St Kilda in 1906.

He then coached Melbourne from 1907 to 1909 and Richmond in 1910 before returning to Melbourne as coach from 1912 to 1914.

Hall became Hawthorn's first League coach in 1925 and after that he went to Williamstown. During his illustrious career, he had either played with or coached five League sides.

He died on 8th March, 1933.
