2008 Beijing Summer Olympics | Chu Mu Yen Profile & Bio, Photos & Videos (original) (raw)

The Warlord of Taiwan Nicknamed "the warlord of Taiwan," Chu Mu Yen won gold in taekwondo in the under 58 kg division, one of two gold medals in taekwondo for the tiny nation. The other was won by Chen Shih Hsin. These were Chinese Taipei's first ever gold medals in an Olympic Games.

The Next Bruce Lee According to the Taipei Times, Chu had been referred to as the next Bruce Lee by members of the international press prior to the Athens Games. His victory there only fueled the comparisons.

Drawing inspiration for his compatriot
Chu competed following Chen's gold medal-winning performace, but didn't allow it to add to the pressure of being in the Olympic Games. "When I saw my younger fellow student Chen Shih Hsin waving our Olympic flag after winning her gold medal," he told reporters in a press conference following his own win, I was moved and greatly encouraged, and I told myself that I would too."
