Gian-Carlo Menotti composed his madrigal fable "The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore" in 1956. It is one of his most sophisticated and engaging works. It's an allegory of the life of the artist, although Menotti was only in his mid-40s, and in mid-career when he wrote it; some of what the work is about hadn't actually happened to him yet, although he knew it would. The text is witty and sharp-edged, and the elegance of the music does not defang it -- Menotti's setting of words is always professionally adroit and his mastery of the whole range of Renaissance choral techniques is a credit to his formal schooling and to his discipline.
