Avala History
A short history, from Avala Film’s website (no longer in existence):
AVALA FILM is Yugoslavia’s oldest and biggest film company. It was founded in 1946, and already in the following year, 1947, its studios released the first Yugoslav post-war feature, SLAVICA, directed by Vjekoslav Afric. Nearly a quarter of all Yugoslav features have been made in the studios of AVALA FILM. To this number should be added some 40 titles which are now also owned by AVALA FILM, since their producers, small companies and independent film-makers’ collectives, have joined AVALA FILM. Forty-two years of activity and 163 films have brought AVALA FILM practically all the important international awards and prizes (prizes at the Cannes, Berlin and Moscow festivals, OSCAR nominations), as well as dozens of gold, silver, and bronze ARENAS at the national feature film festival in Pula. No less significant is the fact that AVALA FILM’s movies are the best- selling Yugoslav films in the world.
As the back as the sixties, AVALA FILM was the first Yugoslav film company to involve foreign partners in the production of Yugoslav films. At the time, prominent foreign directors and actros were often engaged in AVALA FILM’s productions. In the eighies, we successfully revived the same good old idea.
