Istanbul Metro Information
Istanbul Metro is the underground rapid transit system that serves people living in Istanbul, Turkey. The rapid system is operated by Istanbul transport and the metro system is controlled by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Istanbul metro was founded in 1989 and the system serves 62 stations. Istanbul metro is considered to be the second oldest underground urban rail line after London metro. Istanbul metro serves 12 million people living in Turkey and still more lines are under construction. All the metro lines are built fully underground and there is no connection between the lines. This is considered to be the most efficient and cheapest transportation system to get around the city.
Istanbul Metro Lines
Currently Istanbul metro consists of four lines and more lines are under planning stage.
- M1A – The metro line M1 was opened to the public in 1989 and the total length of this line is 20km. The line serves 17 stations and the metro train runs between Ataturk Havalimani and Aksaray. The line is extended towards Yenibosna and the metro train runs from south east to south west. M1 is the most useful line via bus terminal towards the airport.
- M1B – The metro line M1 b was completed in June 2013. The metro train runs between Otogar and Kirazli serving 5 stations. The route is 5.8 km long.
- M2- M2 is the first full metro line which was opened in 1991 and the length of this route is 20km. The metro train runs between Haciosman and Sishane and it serves 13 stations. All the stations have escalator and they are fully accessible for disabled. M2 is the heavy metro line.
- M3 – M3 the metro line was opened to public in 2013 and the route is 15.9 km long. The metro train runs between Kirazli and Metrokent Olimpiyat serving 11 stations. They have planned southern extension with 8 more stations.
- M4 – the line M4 was opened in 2012 and the route is 21.3km long. The metro train runs between Kadikoy and Kartal. At the southeastern end, three more stations are under construction.
- M6 – The line M6 is under construction and scheduled to open in 2015. The route is 20 km long the metro train will be running between Uskudar and Cekmekoy Sancaktepe.
- M7 – the planned line is about 22.9km long and the metro train will run between Kabatas and Mahmutbey.
- MM – the line is under construction and scheduled to open in 2014. The metro train will run between Levent and Hisarustu.

Istanbul Metro Hours
Istanbul Metro runs from 6.00 am to 12.00 midnight. During peak hours, metro riders will get a metro train at an interval of every 5 minutes. On Sundays, passengers will get metro at a time interval of 7 to 10 minutes. Through line M2, the first train runs at 6.15 and on Sundays 6.30. You will get the last train by 12.30. Through line M2, metro riders will get a metro train at an interval of 7 minutes on Sunday.
Istanbul Metro Fare
Istanbul metro has a flat fare of 3.00TL and the fare is paid in tokens. The tokens are also valid in the other transportation system. Akbil ticket or cards are also valid. The Akbil ticket is also valid in metros and other transportation system. Children above 7 years has to pay the fare and the electronic fare cards has predetermined number of trips. For a single trip it will cost TL 4.00 and for double trip it will cost TL 3.50. You can purchase disposable cards from vending machines.
Istanbul Metro Parking
The park and ride facilities are available for metro riders at each metro station. The metro will close gate at some parking area from 9am to 4 pm. You can make a free call and request the gate to be opened.
Istanbul Metro Rules and Tips
In Istanbul, the safety of the passenger is the first priority. They offer high quality riding comfort, air conditioning, lighting and ventilation to metro riders. Passengers must use electronic tickets, cards and token before they start their ride. The metro area is prohibited from smoking.
Passengers are not allowed to speak loudly or hear music loudly in metro stations. Metro riders can carry small pet in the cage and small dogs with collars.
