Birds: Reviews

“An early contender for record of the year. Highly recommended”. ALL ABOUT JAZZ, US

“Birds is as fresh and vigorous as any music being made today and confirms the emergence of a remarkable talent.” Irish Times, UK *****

“The title track begins as playful and quirky as blackbird song before developing a complex brass score. Spring Dance is a lyrical duet with Neset’s sister on flute. Neset’s melodic bop infuses Fields of Clubs, while Math of Mars is dreamy and Fanfare reminiscent of Aaron Copland. Outstanding.” OBSERVER, UK *****

“It’s far too early in Neset’s career for him to be making masterpieces, but Birds already feels like one.” Music OMH, UK, *****

“This is a breathtaking album, this final track leaving you breathless and one of those albums which you put on again immediately it ends.” York Press, UK *****

“Vibrant, bold and imaginative, Neset’s star continues its upwards trajectory.” Irish Examiner, UK *****

“What’s striking is how teeming with influences the music is, from Nordic folk to American pastoral to Django Bates, Steve Reich and Wayne Shorter. You can find most of them in the epic opening title track, and there’s still almost an hour to go. As Anthony Burgess said of James Joyce: here comes everybody.” The Independent, UK *****

“Birds takes shape as a one-hour long suite, and is an example of the exceptional qualities the 28 year old saxophonist/composer has.” Terje Mosnes, Dagbladet, N, 6/6 STARS

“Neset is in my ears the biggest thing that has happened with the saxophone in Norway since Jan Garbarek in the 60s.” Nettavisen, N, 5/6 STARS

“Birds is an astonishing statement, not just of Neset’s prodigious talent on tenor and soprano saxophones but also of his fantastic reach and imagination as a composer.” Herald Scotland, UK

“It’s 25 March and the CD that could still stand on 31 December as the most impressive jazz release of 2013 is available for purchase. Simply brilliant? No, more complexly brilliant. A triumph in every sense.” The Jazz Breakfast, UK

“Birds is a strong follow-up to Golden Xplosion, and Neset shows himself as an exciting player, and a newthinking composer.” VG, N, 5/6 STARS

“A masterpiece.” Jazz Special, DK

“This hotly tipped Norwegian saxophonist has fearsome technique. His follow-up highlights his composing skills with a flurry of resonant tunes. Outstanding record.” THE TIMES ****

“[With Birds] the young Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset has extended his talents. Each new step by Neset seems to take him forward by a big distance”. GUARDIAN **** “Recording’s emphasis is on composition, with unexpected turns and a broad romantic palette”. FT ****

With his new album, Birds, he has taken a giant leap forward and produced an album that not only impresses but will place him on the verge of becoming one of most exciting artists to emerge this decade.

Its predecessor, Golden Xplosion, (released in April 2011) led to the saxophonist and composer becoming one of the most talked about newcomers on the European jazz scene. Described by Terje Mosnes (Dagbladet, Norway) as “t_he most talented Norwegian saxophonist since Jan Garbarek in the 1960s_”, Golden Xplosion demonstrated both Neset’s exemplary technique, energetic creativity, imagination and virtuosity on tenor and soprano saxophones, as well as his brilliance as a composer of intricate, compelling music. It opened the doors to key festival appearances around Europe, but also touring in the US.

The new release Birds is a masterpiece, a through composed work that takes the listener on a journey, bringing together a world of influences with remarkable energy and creativity. It could sit as comfortably on a classical stage as in a jazz club. However, what impresses most is Neset’s ability to combine the freedom of improvisation with the very composed passages. This occurs most remarkably in Spring Dance, which features Marius’s highly talented sister Ingrid Neset on flute. There are elements of Stravinsky, Charles Ives, Steve Reich, Wayne Shorter, Django Bates and Michael Brecker, but most of all you can hear Neset’s original voice as he takes you through eleven compositions each with their own distinctive visual character.

Within each track there are many wonderful surprises. Highlights include the title track Birds where the opening melody is not played by saxophone but by Bjarke Mogensen on accordion, demonstrating Marius Neset´s influence by Norwegian Folk Music.

Birds is a further development of Marius Neset as a performer and bandleader. It is the perfect showcase of his brilliance as an inspirational and inspired composer. The stage is set…

UK Tour reviews

We are currently mid way through our UK tour and so far had some amazing gigs. Our first concert at the Pizza Express, London was recorded by BBC Radio 3 Jazz on 3 which will be broadcast on 19th Sept. We’ve also just received a 5/5 star review from the Guardian (John Fordham) which you can read by clicking HERE .

Here are some links to reviews from our concerts:

PIZZA EXPRESS, LONDON – 1st SEPT 2011

Evening Standard – read here in full (Jack Massarick)

“After Parker, Coltrane and Ornette Coleman have come Michael Brecker and Steve Coleman, all players of this most articulate of instruments. It’s been some while since a new game-changer emerged but the buzz surrounding Marius Neset suggests that he just might be it”.

Jazzwise Magazine – read here in full (Stephen Graham)

“Five star album reviews don’t come thick on the ground particularly for newcomers. But Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset garnered quite a clutch of primo reviews earlier in the year when his debut Golden Xplosion was released… So no pressure then! But, when you’re on a roll, you’re on a roll, and Neset, who while making his London jazz club debut as a leader, dazzled relentlessly in the Dean Street basement premises whether on languorous ballads, frenetic 7/4 (into was it 14/8?) stormers, or hymn-like anthems such as the wondrous finale ‘Angel Of The North’”.

Financial Times – read here in full (Mike Hobart)

“Technical excellence comes as standard for any working jazz group, but Marius Neset’s derring-do on tenor saxophone has a muscular virtuosity that is exciting in itself”.

THE EDGE ARTS CENTRE, SHROPSHIRE – 3rd Sept 2011

Jazz Mann read here in full

“Marius Neset looks set to become one of the major figures of European jazz in the coming years”.

COLSTON HALL, BRISTOL

Venue Magazine - read here in full – 4th Sept 2011

“This is definitely a player to keep watching”.
