Annika Ström is an internationally renowned Swedish artist, based in the UK, who has exhibited internationally including Berlin, New York and Dublin. Frieze Art Fair commissioned a performance piece ‘Ten embarrassed men’ in 2010 and her performance ‘The book left behind’ was recently performed at Le Centre Pompidou, Paris in April 2013.
Ström will encourage people to look and engage with the Great Hall in a new way through text and performance, by creating large scale words as sculptural forms spelling out the phrase ‘look the other way’. The dynamic presence of the letters will stretch across the hall, inviting visitors to move through the space to discover the phrase as it reveals itself. This everyday ambiguous saying allows visitors to reflect and consider this majestic building and history, forming their own responses.
Prompted by this thought provoking statement, the artist is collaborating with staff and students from the University of Winchester, to explore their responses to the Great Hall and their interpretations of the phrase. Together they will create a performance piece, involving both movement and music which will be scheduled at different times during the exhibition and will also be filmed to view on-line.
Programmed in association with artSOUTH, Solent Showcase are commissioning artSOUTH artist Annika Ström to create a new collaborative performance piece for the gallery and Guildhall Square. Her work will connect with the history and heritage of the docks in Southampton and the people that use this ever changing space.
