A pioneering journalist who championed the cause of the Black press, Hazel B. Garland was the first African American woman to serve as editor-in-chief of a nationally circulated newspaper chain.
Her popular columns appeared in various editions of the Pittsburgh Courier for more than forty years, from 1943 to 1988. She launched her career in the golden age of the Black press, which began during World War I and ended in the early 1960s, when mainstream media began covering the Civil Rights Movement.
During that period Black newspapers had been crusading organs extolling racial Black justice and providing, with few exceptions, the only outlet for Black journalistic talent. …
