County of Jette Communal Museum (original) (raw)

A collection of paintings, photographs, old documents and excavations from the area

The Dieleghem Abbey in Jette is the oldest abbey in Brussels. The abbatial residence was built by the architect Dewez in the 18th century and is a testimony to classical art. It houses Roman collections excavated in 1968 such as a Roman seal, soldiers' skulls found in a Roman well, slave shackles, pottery, tunics, etc. This religious site had an important economic function in the Middle Ages. Memorabilia belonging to the ancient abbey's monks demonstrating their activities and folklore are also on display. Other display cases illustrate the history of the Counts of Jette, churches and cottages in the region. What also makes this museum so special is its regional history library, one of the most important in Belgium. A systematic exchange policy, lead for years by the Jette historical, archaeological and folklore circle (owners of the museum's collections), allows the reader to consult on the spot works and books published by sister societies in Belgium and abroad (even outside Europe).
