Peter Burling | Yachting New Zealand (original) (raw)

2012 London Olympic silver medallist, 2014 and 2013 World and European Champion in the Olympic 49er skiff, Peter Burling is one of New Zealand’s hottest young talents in sailing.

In 2008 Peter became the youngest sailor to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games when he and Carl Evans, both 17 years old, competed in the 470 Class. Burling sailed as crew then, going on to take the helm in the 49er skiff class with independently accomplished sailor, Blair Tuke on board.

Reaching 24 years old on 1 January 2015 Peter is already an Olympic medallist, a two-time Olympian, double World Champion in the 49er (as well as World Championships silvers in 2011 and 2012), and a four-time winner of the New Zealand Young Sailor of the Year. He and Tuke were named 2013 and 2014 New Zealand Sailors of the Year.

Peter has won five world championships titles - in the International Moth in 2015, in the 49er skiff in 2014 and 2013, and in the 420 class during 2006 and 2007, and he led the NZL Sailing Team with ETNZ to victory in the inaugural Red Bull Youth America's Cup.

Peter had his first taste of offshore racing in the 2013 Sydney to Hobart Race.
