Born in Bristol but educated in Gloucestershire, Steve joined the Metropolitan Police for 11 months after leaving school. After finishing training and being posted in East London, he quickly realised the police force was not for him.
Being young and at the start of his career, Steve decided he wanted to go travelling and landed a job as a Truckie at Team Lotus based in Norfolk. Steve quickly fell in love with Formula One and decided that he had found the right industry.
After five years, Steve left as the team was in decline and he became a spares co-ordinator at Tyrrell. After eight years he had been promoted through Production Controller and Assistant Team Manager before being made Team Manager.
In 1998, British American Tobacco bought Tyrrell and at that point Steve left the team to become Team Manager of the Honda F1 Project, as Honda prepared to join Formula One in the following years. Steve built a test team and new race team from scratch before Honda decided to supply engines rather than act as a constructor.
Steve joined Arrows as Team Manager in 2000, although he realised the team was approaching its demise. Enstone was the next stop as he joined Benetton who later became Renault between 2002-2010 and Lotus Renault GP in 2011. Here Steve met Pat Symonds and after two Championships, Genii bought the team and Steve moved on.
He became Team Manager at Caterham in 2012, although he moved to Toro Rosso after just one season. In 2014, after two years in Italy with Toro Rosso, Steve was back working alongside Pat Symonds as he joined Williams as Sporting Manager. Steve has already stated that he intends to finish his career at Williams.
