Although in the past the attempts to identify the identity of the Canarios have been very numerou... more Although in the past the attempts to identify the identity of the Canarios have been very numerous, it is not until the late nineteenth or early twentieth century that artists and writers from the islands feel compelled to point out, from their particular perspective, the values and characteristics of an insular collective consciousness. The urgent search for a cultural definition in the previous century resulted in an intellectual commotion in the twentieth and a reading of the islands' self-tradition in constant resistance with the European. This article provides a brief survey of the Aboriginal cultural permanence in the works of Canario writers as well as the imposed Spanish identity as an attempt to establish a homogeneous sense of nation. The article also discusses how intellectuals from the Canary Islands have referred to the marine topic to discuss the political and economic relations between the islands and the peninsula, emphasizing aspects that frequently emerge in th...
