Step right up ! Bargains galore ! OOPS. Cover everything.
Garage Sale weekend had its moments–some of them rather damp. Lots of stuff out there to be checked out, maybe bargained over. Lots of evidence of families outgrowing all sorts of things. Lots of families growing into new fashions and looking for a bargain or two. Clothes…toys… appliances…you name it, somebody had a hot buy just looking for a new user ( I still have some interesting items just waiting for somebody from the Antiques Roadshow to stop in…like they’d ever go for the old chair on the front porch.). Wasn’t a big parade of customers checking out my cookbook treasure trove. Of course, I had to cover things up a couple of times when it started raining–didn’t look real good under the tarp. I think that I probably made about four dollars , tops.
Dang ! Guess I’ll have to postpone the world tour.
Then there was the Senior Awards night at James A. Garfield High School–an outstanding showcase of talent and achievement, for sure. Also impressive was the number of scholarships and awards handed out to the rising graduates. For a small district, there are surely quite a lot of generous, altruistic, community-minded groups and individuals doing their best to support and encourage these young people to go on and be all that they can be. Also encouraging was the fact that not all of the awards were strictly for “college” but also for advanced training in skilled trades and other perhaps non-traditional occupations. Let them each make their own way in their own way.
Also noticeable every year are the changes in fashion, especially for girls. The dresses, the hair styles, the shoes all paint a picture of what is THE good look of the moment. For boys it’s usually different; they’re frequently doing their best to dress as though it’s nothing special and they get lots of recognition all of the time, so what’s the big deal. The really odd thing, to me , is how some individuals think that they show their affection for some honoree by yelling loudly and embarrassing them. Happens all of the time and not just on occasions like this. Louder is not better, if you ask me (Which, of course, you did not).
And the district-wide band concert was excellent as well. Fifth grade, sixth grad, middle school and high school bands all got to do their thing for the crowd–which was good-sized on a Sunday afternoon with the temperature rising. They all acquitted themselves well, coming up with rousing tunes that could even be sung along with; H.S. even got to do “O…H…I…O” at one point–fun.
Memorial Day and Graduation are coming right up, followed by SummerFest and Fourth of July.
Try to keep up.!
