Two pieces of very bad news and one piece of good news (original) (raw)
Very bad news #1:
Alexis Tioseco, editor of the wonderful Criticine, and tireless champion of South East Asian cinema, was killed last year. Alexis posted to this group as _fiction_.
A eulogy for Alexis and his partner Nika Bohinc can be found here. Apichatpong made this video for him for the Love Letters project:
Very bad news #2:
The director of Offside and Crimson Gold, Jafar Panahi, is still a prisoner of conscience in Iran and is undergoing torture. He started a hunger strike just over a week ago.
[John Torres, Arleen Cuevas, Khavn, Jafar Panahi, Alexis Tioseco, and Raya Martin]
Good news:
Apichatpong Weerasethakul has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. I assume this means his films will be better distributed from now on. A recent interview with him is here.
