While there are no guarantees of happiness, economic development can nevertheless be used to achieve positive social impact that can broaden an individual’s spectrum of choices and give everyone greater capacity and capability to lead fulfilling lives in the manner they see fit. Apart from social factors, there are two other areas that are essential to human well-being – a healthy environment and technological progress. Assessments of economic development should therefore also consider indicators of environmental conditions, social wellbeing, and technological advancement.

It argues that Chinese participation at the Paris Peace Conference was motivated by a quest for justice. China especially sought redress from the Unequal Treaties with foreign powers such as Germany. The Chinese delegates used ideals espoused by US President Woodrow Wilson to
support their claims and also displayed political and diplomatic savvy as they used tools such as the media to further their cause. Nevertheless, Lou Tseng-Tsiang and his compatriots in Paris and China were disappointed with the outcome of the Peace Conference and the Chinese delegation ultimately did not sign the Treaty of Versailles.

This dissertation studied the SMB’s presence in Manchuria as an example of Swiss entanglements in imperial and colonial projects. The SMB’s identification of itself as a Swiss institution was analyzed, and then related to how it conceptualized the importance of Swiss participation in missionary work. SMB writings were analyzed to discuss how the Swiss perceived Manchuria and its inhabitants. The SMB contribution to the development of education in Manchuria was studied amid a context of broader missionary engagement with education, as well as against a backdrop of educational reform movements in twentieth century China. Chinese historical narratives of Msgr. Dr. Eugen Imhof, the first SMB Apostolic Prefect of Qiqihar were then compared with the SMB’s own historical memories of him in order to analyze how he has been appropriated for patriotic Chinese historical narratives. The dissertation then concluded by discussing the SMB’s retrospective view of its mission in China as well as its continued engagement with Chinese Catholics today.
