What If? AU Challenge (original) (raw)
March 21st, 2017, 08:09 pm
WELCOME: THE INTRODUCTION POST
Hello! I’m your host,
. For my birthday I decided to treat myself to one of my favorite fic things: an AU! How do I define an AU? For me, it means taking canon characters and making a significant change in their circumstances. This can happen within the confines of canon (canon divergent) or the characters can be dropped into completely different worlds.
Basically, an AU is a fun way for me to see how I can keep canon characters familiar in wholly new surroundings or circumstances. As simple as ‘what if character A had done this instead of character B’ or as complex as ‘character A is now a barbarian with mystic powers’. And everything in between!
Starting April 2021, the monthly posts will be going bimonthly. I'm keeping this community nice and simple, so here’s everything you need to know:
We’re multifandom! This challenge welcomes all fandoms, including RPF and original fic. All ships, romantic or platonic. I only ask that everyone remains respectful. There’s room for all of us here.
No minimum wordcounts! You can write as little or as much as you want to meet the challenge topic. In fact, you don’t have to write at all. Challenge fills can be fanvids or fanart or whatever outlet your creativity feels like using.
Prompts welcome! I'll offer up some suggestions for each theme, and encourage anyone else who wants to do the same. If you have a cool idea for how a particular theme could play out please respond in the comments.
No deadlines! Every other month, a new theme will be posted, but if you start working on something that takes on epic proportions, you can post it any time. You'll still get added to the masterlist even if you write something for a theme that's years old.
Must be a joiner! Only members of this community will be able to see posts and leave comments. We want this to be a safe place for ideas to be shared. I will also be cross-posting to LJ to maximize participation.
That’s pretty much it, folks. I hope you’ll be inspired by each theme. I’ll be trying to write something for each one as well because, as I mentioned, I love AUs!
You can post your completed works anywhere, as long as you link it back here. I will compile masterlists for each AU theme. And we can all revel in the loveliness of AUs!
Update: If you're looking for a beta reader or want to offer your services, please see this post.

These recs are super(natural)!
There are still three weeks left in the Supernatural challenge, friends, so I thought this would be a good time to share our fic recs.
I know I’ve been here before, but I’m going to rec my series that have a supernatural bent. Some have ghosts, some have monsters, some have magic. Some have a delightful combo of the three.
The Truth is Out There (Stargate Atlantis/Numb3rs): An X-Files fusion where John is the Mulder and Rodney is the Scully, and Ian Edgerton is their occasional co-agent/nemesis. In which there are (maybe) aliens and (probably) vampires.
The Inconsistent Witch (Trixie Belden/The Three Investigators): Trixie is a witch who isn’t as successful at it as she’d like to be. Jupiter is a private detective. Together they make a formidable team.
Unexpected Discoveries (Stargate Atlantis): Our boys work on a reality TV series that has them searching for everything from the chupacabra to ghosts to sasquatch, with varying degrees of success. You’ll find some fun crossovers sprinkled in here, too.
Monster Hunters (Prodigal Son): This is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fusion, so Malcolm and the gang are in high school, Gil is the token adult in the room, and Martin is an actual demon instead of just a metaphoric one.
Sun-Starved (Stargate Atlantis): John is a vampire, in a relationship with human Rodney. Luckily for him, Rodney is a genius and finds different ways to give John things he thought he couldn’t have anymore.
After the Eclipse (Original): Strange things start happening in a small town after a solar eclipse, including a giant tentacled something appearing in the lake and some unexpected shapeshifting.
Modern Magic AU (Stargate Atlantis): This is one of scenarios where the normal human world has no idea that a magical world exists alongside it. In that world, John works for MagiCorps as a magic-wielding cop and Rodney is the greatest theatrical celebrity in either world. Lots of other familiar SGA faces populate this world as well.
Trixie Belden, PI for the Supernatural (Trixie Belden Mysteries/The Three Investigators): When Trixie finally opens her own PI firm in Los Angeles, her clientele isn’t anything like she expected. You’ll find everything from ghosts to gremlins to angels here.
The Family Business (Stargate Atlantis): Here we have a Supernatural fusion, where instead of the Winchester brothers, we have the McKay siblings. And John is their very special angel.
As you can see, I enjoy walking on the supernatural side. This isn’t even all the series I have that fit this theme, and of course there are many stand-alone fics as well.
It’s your turn, friends. Let’s see those creepy, kooky, altogether spooky fic recs!

Spooky Media Recs
Greetings, AU friends!
We’re drawing ever closer to Halloween, which means I’m watching more spooky content in my downtime. I thought I’d share some of my faves and ask for some of yours. Let’s go!
FreakyLinks (2000): This TV series is sadly only available on YouTube, which is a crime. It only had one season, but I would’ve watched so much more! The premise is this – Derek Barnes, who worked with his twin brother on a supernatural website, discovers that there really is an unseen world out there after his brother’s apparent suicide. Every episode features a standalone creature/ghost/etc., but there’s also the series arc of what happened to Derek’s brother.
The Uninvited (1944): This is one of my absolute fave movies of all time. When I want a spooky ghost story, this is my go-to. No buckets of blood. No unnecessary jump scares. Just an old house on the cliffs of Cornwall that’s home to strange noises and uneasy feelings tied to a tragedy that took place nearly twenty years before the start of the movie. I love that there are light-hearted scenes mixed in with the tense and spooky ones. Plus, who doesn’t love Ray Milland? ::grins::
The Watcher in the Woods (1980): This is a Disney classic from my childhood that I will never not love. A family moves into a creepy old English house at the edge of the woods, and the oldest daughter discovers a mystery from the past that’s affecting her in the present. There are ghostly visitations, a mysterious ceremony, and a younger sister who hears voices. Spoiler: Not a ghost, but something more unexpected!
The Gate (1987): This could’ve been a party movie, since the premise is that the parents of two kids, one a teenager, go away for the weekend leaving the older sister in charge. But the younger brother and his friend discovered a hole in the yard, a geode inside the hole, and set off a chain of events that may have opened the gates of Hell. There are horrifying nightmares, tiny creepy demons, and two contentious siblings whose love holds the key to saving themselves and the world.
Tremors (1990): Giant, murderous worms coming from underground? Yes, please! The real stars of this movie are the quirky residents of the town under siege – Val and Earl as best friends/handymen, the crazy survivalists with their underground bunker (one of them played by Reba McIntire), the obnoxious kid who seems not to have any parents. It’s a real adventure as they all work together to try and escape the worms (graboids).
Bonus spooky podcast:
The Magnus Archives: I’ve only recently started listening to this podcast, but it really fits the spooky bill. Each episode is a statement made by someone who has experienced something supernatural, which has been dug out of the archives and is being converted to audio by newly appointed Head Archivist Jonathan Sims. I listen on YouTube, but I imagine there are other places to find this? Maybe? I’m not hip to the world of podcasts.
Okay, your turn! What spooky media are you indulging in this Halloween season? What supernatural movies/tv series/podcasts/etc. hit the spot for you? I really want to know!

Challenge #68: Creepy and Kooky
October in New York – the leaves are changing color, pumpkin spice has taken over everything, and I can start thinking about wearing sweaters. Which can only mean one thing…it’s time for the Supernatural AU!
They’re creepy and they’re kooky
Mysterious and spooky
They’re all together ooky
The Addams family!
I used to watch the Addams family as a kid. The Munsters, too. I’ve always been interested in the supernatural, whether it was a campy TV show or a Stephen King novel. Is it any wonder I enjoy Halloween season? ::grins::
There are a lot of ways you can tackle a Supernatural AU:
• The crazy cat lady is actually a very powerful witch
• Being the only “normal” one in a supernatural family (a la Marilyn Munster)
• Being the only supernatural one in a “normal” family
• Inheriting a haunted house/haunted object
• Being an out and proud vampire/werewolf/etc.
• Movie/TV/book fusion with your fave scary content
• Running a bar/club/etc that caters to the supernatural community
• Day in the life of a ghost
• The weirdest, creepiest family in the neighborhood is actually the most wholesome (a la The Addams Family)
So gather with your shawl on, a roost that you can crawl on, and let’s get in touch with our inner Addamses!
PROMPTS WANTED! We’d love to see your prompts for this theme! Leave them in the comments below. They can be fandom-specific, but with the variety on this comm it would probably be better if they were more generic. Maybe you’ll get inspired by a prompt! Or someone will be inspired by yours!
You’ve got two months till the next prompt goes up (December) so have fun writing!
Please Note: If you post your work to AO3 please be sure to select the What If AU Challenge collection.
To be included in the masterlist, you must also post here.
There are no actual deadlines at this comm. You can write any theme at any time, and as long as you post it here, you’ll get added to the masterlist. Also, we support all fandoms (including original fic), all pairings, and all ships (gen, het, slash), and other forms of AU media including art, podfics, any ole thing!

VID: High vs Low Fantasy
Still not sure about high fantasy vs low fantasy? Here's another interpretation:
August 31st, 2024, 07:53 pm
Fantastic Recs!
We’re one month into the High/Low Fantasy challenge, friends. How’s it going? Have you been inspired? I have a fun idea that I hope to turn into a fic before the next challenge goes up. We’ll see!
Today we’re looking for your fantasy recs! Throw it all at me, friends. Fic recs, book recs, media recs. All the recs, whether you prefer to go high or low. ::grins::
Here are mine:
A Wizard, A Knight and a Dragon (Stargate Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay): In the High Fantasy category, we have John as a knight tasked with slaying the dragon and saving the princess, only wizard Rodney has already empowered the princess and befriended the dragon.
Color Magic (Stargate Atlantis): Low Fantasy this time, with Evan having the ability to sense colors just by touch, which ends up saving the day.
Do You Believe in Magic? (Trixie Belden Mysteries/The Three Investigators, Trixie Belden/Jupiter Jones): More Low Fantasy, where Jupiter meets a legitimate (but not very skilled) witch during the course of his missing persons investigation.
Modern Magic ‘verse (Stargate Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay): Low Fantasy in the vein of Hogwarts, where a magical world exists alongside our normal world, and John works for the magical police department.
Paranormal Task Force ‘verse (Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams): Low Fantasy again. This time the Five-0 team has a paranormal bent, with a resident ghost, a techno witch, and a team leader who isn’t quite what he seems.
Hope Remains While the Company is True (Stargate Atlantis): A short riff on The Lord of the Rings where John in an Elf, Rodney is a Dwarf, and Ronon is a Ranger, looking for their kidnapped companions.
As far as other media goes, I’ve always been drawn to Low Fantasy/Urban Fantasy – shows like Grimm, Lost Girl, Charmed, and Lucifer. It’s always interesting for me to see how fantastical elements work in the real world.
Okay, AU friends! It’s your turn. Share your recs!
