And just when you start to think this slow country crap is for the birds and you're gonna put in the first disc, you get smacked with "Dreamer In My Dreams," a long, sloppy, raucous honky-tonk stomper that falls somewhere between "incredibly fun" and "dangerously fun." My CommentsI've always imagined that this would be a blistering barn burner played live. A good old fashioned false ending, some tempo changes, some random noises at different times (perhaps foreshadowing some of YHF?) and a cryptic lyric make this one of Wilco's most fun songs.Next: Summerteeth | | | | | | Read 4 - Post

Music means something different to everybody and the stars are different to everybody. A lot of people don't care who Ian Hunter is, but if I was in the same room with him, I wouldn't be able to talk."FYI: Ian HunterLonely One is about Westerberg. I thought Lonely One was about Jay F. ...much like Mr. Dylan whom he worships in his song "Lonely One.""The Lonely 1," one of Tweedy's prettiest songs. Actually, it's one of the prettiest songs, period. (Google Cache)Jeff Tweedy and Co. concluded their second encore of the night with the heartbreaking solitude of "The Lonely 1."Tweedy winds down disc two with the slow molasses sweetness of "The Lonely 1..."Tweedy ended the evening with a tender rendition of Wilco's ultimate ode to fandom, "The Lonely 1..." I tried to find the song that I would cut if the record were chopped down to a single disc. Maybe "What's the world got in store?" or "Why would you wanna live?" but then I find myself humming them when I'm waiting in line at the grocery store. (this is one of my favorite links about Wilco that I've run across so far)On "Why Would You Wanna Live," when Tweedy laments "kid, you’ve paid your dues, dues and dues," he’s probably alluding to the many years he's been in exceptional bands out of the limelight while lesser talents got the glory and the cash."Chinese Apple" is the most fully formed song on the album, rivaling Tweedy's best atmospheric Wilco songs, such as "Why Would You Wanna Live" and "One By One." Why Would You Wanna Live (4:16) uses a mix of piano and drum for a very strong and interesting percussion throughout the song. The downbeat lyrics (read the title) and drifty choruses make this song click in an unusual way.My CommentsI couldn't remember how this song sounded for the life of me before I started researching it for this update. I usually listen to a song nine or ten times before I start searching - even if it is a favorite - just so I don't humiliate myself too much when I write about it.It really is a cool song - and when I use the word cool, I mean in a "hanging around the honky tonk with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth while listening to the band" sort of way. While there could be many meanings to the lyrics, it seems to be clear that by "world" he doesn't mean "planet Earth," but "world" as in "world of the music industry" or "world of fashion" or whatever. Since it is about Tweedy, one can infer that (as the geocities author linked above writes) it is about the music industry.Indeed, why would anybody want to stay in the music world when you have paid so many dues and still see acts with less talents make their way to the top?Perhaps this is addressing a fan who wants to go into music? Or addressing himself? | | | | | | Read 3 - Post

I love the lyric:_This dreamer died when his dreams died tooBut I don't really mind if I dream about you.I can't say what any of that means_One of my favorites on this album. The song itself makes me imagine Wilco as a booze drenched bar band. Kingpin is a much less serious song, that seems to just be Tweedy having some fun...The very stupid Kingpin from Wilco's very good 1996 cd Being There would simply not fit hereThere are even influences from Johnny Cash (Somebody Else's Song), The Band (Kingpin), and Rod Stewart (Dreamer in My Dreams). My CommentsIt just can't be denied that this is a really silly song. I hated it at first but the more I've listened to it, the more fun it has become. It is my understanding that this song is absolutely a blast in concert.I mean, how much can you hate a song that references Spinal Tap?Also, the jam sequences rock Oh, and I love it when he fails to rhyme "big wig."Help me out: Is it "Guitar Tabs" or "Guitar Tab" | | | | | | Read 5 - Post

Drums, Percussion, Guitar, VocalsNote: Being There doesn't provide specific information about who plays what on what songs.Assorted CommentsRate it at RateItAllOn the record, f'r example, "Someone Else's Song" is a stark, hushed ballad. My personal interpretation is that "Someone Else" might be Gram Parsons in a quiet moment; that's neither here nor there I guess. But on stage the other night, "Someone" got the second-most-drastic facelift of the night as Bennett, kneeling in front of his amp, sculpted the chords of the song from pure feedback howl. (Damn fine job of it, too -- stayed in key almost throughout.) And while a noisy rearrangement is often a last resort of a band clowning around, I didn't think that Wilco lost the emotional core of the song -- it was a different, but not necessarily less valid, version of the same vision. The lovely "Someone Else's Song" borrows heavily from the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood..."Then Jeff Tweedy goes into another song about other people's music with 'Someone Else's Song,' a song portraying the frustrated feeling of try to impress someone but just sounding no different than anything before you, which ironically does not describe Wilco, with Being There no longer sounding much like anything from Uncle Tupelo. In "Someone Else's Song," a lover accuses him of musical and romantic redundancy, but he refuses to give up--nothing is ever fully new, he seems to say, and it's ridiculous to try to be.But Tweedy is not easy with that process or its product; he confronted his own musical past with a wry rendition of "Someone Else's Song," a beleaguered expression of impatience with those who would speak to Wilco's most apparent borrowings and reinventions (for instance, the theme of the song in question is lifted wholesale from Neil Young's "Borrowed Tune," an irony not lost). My CommentsFunny - I never noticed the similarity to "Norwegian Wood" -particularly in the introduction - until I read the above comment. Now, I can't believe I missed it.I interpret this song as being about pained communication between a couple - a theme that kicks off "Being There" with "Misunderstood." Of course, the movie "Being There" is all about an idiot savant who is mistaken for a great philisophical genius, so perhaps misunderstanding is the great overarching theme of the album. Is the misunderstanding in this song between a romantic couple? A song writing team? A musician trying to break out of the contraints of an alt-country format that he helped create and his audience? I suppose that is up to interpretation.Clearly, the singer is frustrated with his inability to do something new - which makes this song a great precursor to the work which is to come on the next album. Overall, this is a pleasantly heartbreaking "old school" Wilco number.Got to say, this was one of the most fun songs to research so far. It has clearly made a big impression on a lot of people and there were, as you can tell from the comments, some very different opinions about its meaning. Cool! | | | | | | Read 6 - Post

Nice harmony singing, that echo on the drums, the rhythm. Sounds just like a Wild Honey or Sunflower left over to me. I love it. I think the Beach Boys comparison is a bit of a stretch (the Sesame Street comparison may be apt, though), but it does evoke something of the sixties, in my opinion.I like to think of "Outtamind (Outta Sight)" as the alternative version to this song, actually. | | | | | | Read 8 - Post

[is] loose, ragged and filled with slidin', pickin', yellin', Jerry Lee-esque piano pumping and plain good fun.The smooth lilt of "Far, Far Away" and "Someday Soon" offer quite a contrast to the thrashing, distortion-laden songs that precede them....pure country......while "Someday Soon" touches at one point on their frustration with the industry ("Cash is gonna flow down by the old mainstream").My CommentsThis is a pretty straight forward - if minor - song about wishing a girl would be in love with the singer. It is filled with hope - the only negative thought that enters into it is that there has clearly been a break up between the two characters.Oh yeah, and it is about Jack and Jill. No, really. | | | | | | Read 4 - Post

It foreshadows some of the amazing compositions to come.In its own way, this is one of the most painful of Wilco's songs, and in another, it is one of the most triumphant. It is like he brings you to tears and then gives you the best present ever.Oh, and the amazing "anti-solo" at 3:30. When people say they were stunned by some of the weirdness on _AGIB_, I wonder sometimes if they ever heard this track.Brilliant song - maybe the best on the album. | | | | | | Read 10 - Post
