This bibliometric review explored the nature of research that had referred to robots in the context of neurodevelopmental disorders and psychology, outlining the range of research areas, most prolific researchers, outlets for research dissemination, and trends. Method Using the database Scopus, publications were identified that mentioned in the abstract robot as well as one of several common neurodevelopmental disorders. Results were analyzed and visually presented using the software VOSviewer. An additional search identified publications about robots in the context of psychological research more broadly. Results Studies about autism spectrum disorder and social communication skills were the most frequent. Much of this work is disseminated as publications related to engineering and neuroscience, which is also consistent with the background of the most prolific and cited researc...

This diversity generates new research questions that need to be met with an adequate infrastructure of psychological methods and theory. In this review, we illustrate the current lack of a sub-discipline in psychology to systematically study the psychological corollaries of living in societies where the application of robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is becoming increasingly common. We thus propose that organized efforts be made toward recognition of robopsychology as a sub-discipline so that the field of psychology moves away from isolated publications of robot- and AI-related topics to a body of knowledge that is able to meet the demands for change, as the world is preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We propose a definition of robop...

A significant solution to meet the challenge, could be the use of Personal Virtual Assistant (PVA). The aim of this paper is to share the know-how reached in the design and adaptation of the Personal Virtual Assistant “Anne” for moderate dementia patients and their formal caregivers. The paper presents the results of the first iteration of protected environment tests in Italy and Luxembourg.

TW allow gathering physiological data from children with autism and can be used to facilitate their communication and interaction with parents and caregivers during daily life activities. Communication plays a key role for the children's mental and social development [1]. The variable symptoms of autism are generally grouped under the name of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) [2]. ASD patients are characterized as having difficulties in social interaction [3], communication [4], tendency to fixate on limited interests and repetitive behaviors [2]. They show less interaction in free play situations and rarely initiate social interaction [5]. In several medical fields there is an increasing need for ecological monitoring of physiology variables to support medical interventions and therapies outside the clinical setting [6]: wearables with biosensors could contribute to mee...

If it occurs however, this could mean that the artificial personality is accepted as a conversation partner by the user. An experiment with a robot and a screen agent in an eldercare institution both in a more and less expressive condition shows that it occurs: participants showed indeed more expressiveness with a more expressive robot or agent. The effect seemed to be stronger for the robot. Although the robot differed in more ways from the agent, this could be an indication of agent embodiment being a moderating factor.

We describe an experiment with a conversational robot and elderly users (n=30) that incorporates both a test session and a long term user observation. The experiment did confirm the hypothesis that perceived enjoyment has an effect on the intention to use a robotic system. Furthermore, findings show that the general assumption in technology acceptance models that intention to use predicts actual use is also applicable to this specific technology used by elderly people. This includes the choice of specific robots, possibly with adjustments, to match particular needs of practitioners in their regular work processes.
