At a time when the nation has its full share of difficulties...the question is not whether universities need to concern themselves with society's problems but whether they are discharging this responsibility as well as they should." National Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good "We cannot lay claim to greater public investment-to which we must lay claim if we are to serve our function in a knowledgeintensive society that also subscribes to democratic valuesunless we are seen to serve the public good". Multidisciplinary perspectives on higher education for the public good.

Both programs were created and administered by the National Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good at the University of Michigan. Four independent content analyses were conducted on the 217 descriptions, which yielded five main themes and nineteen subthemes of "higher education for the public good. " Additionally, several overarching foci emerged that cut across many of the thematic areas. This article concludes with a discussion of important implications for public policy, institutional practices, community relations, research, curricular and cocurricular offerings to students, and the choices and quality of relationships institutions engage in with other social entities.

A third group emerged during analyses, students with medical disabilities, which appeared unique from both apparent and non-apparent disabilities. This study involved a survey of 1,026 students with disabilities from across Canada. Students with apparent disabilities received significantly greater amounts of funding from government student grants and bursary programs. Students with medical disabilities received greater social assistance, had significantly higher projected education-related debt loads, and expressed greater concern regarding financial barriers and debt repayment. The findings regarding education-related debt and financial barriers for students with non-apparent disabilities and medical disabilities suggest a need for further investigation and potential policy implications for these specific cohorts of students.

Service-learning approach options along a non-hierarchical continuum (philanthropic, social justice, and social transformation) are examined; the theoretical clusters used to frame this examination include experiential education, social learning, student development, and liberatory education. Various dimensions and potential implications of each approach are explored. Regardless of the particular service-learning approach adopted by Canadian institutions, decision makers and participants should be conscious of the parameters and potential impact of their chosen approach.

We examine and rationalize the methodological concerns regarding content analysis of open-ended comments in the qualitative study. We describe a data analysis technique, using qualitative responses from National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) as an example, and highlight the findings in a thematic way to convey how undergraduate students perceive issues that challenge them to develop skills, awareness, and confidence, as well as the potential factors that influence student engagement and future success. Finally, we provide potentials of how these findings can be utilized to improve student experience, limitations of this study as well as suggestions for future research.
