Research paper thumbnail of Determining Value for Digital Humanities Tools: Report on a Survey of Tool Developers

As a way of filling this gap, the authors conducted an online survey of developers of digital humanities tools in March 2008. The survey focused on their perceptions of their work, how they felt their tool development fit into a structure of academic rewards, and the value of tool development as a scholarly pursuit. Survey results indicate that tool development is indeed considered a scholarly activity by developers, but recognition of this work and rewards for it lag behind rewards for traditional scholarly pursuits (such as journal articles and book publication). This paper presents a summary of the results of the survey, ending with some suggestions for further research.

These two efforts combined to create a digital object repository using the Fedora object repository that would be partially populated by the items digitized by archives staff. As the Fedora repository was developed, policies regarding metadata and digitization were created and a temporary MS Access database was created to capture metadata as images were scanned. Ultimately these images and metadata records would be ingested into the repository and future images and records would be added directly t...

This short introduction to metadata attempts to give a brief description of what metadata is and what new ends it represents. This article also proposes some key questions about metadata: What attributes make metadata a tool for more uniform resource discovery tor electronic resources on the World Wide Web? And how does metada to differ from our more traditional cataloguing tools, such as MARC? Finally, I offer a short annotated bibliography to more indepth information about metadata.

Though previous studies have shown that journal editors are willing to consider manuscripts derived from electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), faculty advisors and graduate students continue to raise concerns that online discoverability of ETDs negatively impact future opportunities to publish those findings. The current study investigated science journal policies on open access ETDs and found that more than half of the science journals responding (51.4%) reported that manuscripts derived from openly accessible ETDs are welcome for submission and an additional 29.1 percent would accept revised ETDs under certain conditions.
