Why have there been 3,651 journal article reads and eBook downloads (free on my website) across 151 countries as of December 31, 2023? My research asks: How do adult individuals change in a fundamental way and how can Telehealth support that? The comprehensive theory is the result of 23 interviews of expert therapists, review of 339 publications (271 citations), and my own 40 years of practice. Results: A talk-therapy approach that is intersectional. My own clients are healing, coping and growing; and my interns' understanding and skills are expanding. The fear that in-person contact could cause illness and death was palpable and realistic. I had a stark choice. Close up shop or change. Thirty-plus years as a licensed clinician led me to offer Telehealth for psychotherapy and supervision; and focus my doctoral dissertation on the subject.
I interviewed twenty-three experienced clinicians about individual psychotherapy with adults. The question, broadly framed, “What works well or not, why?” Were my doubts about psychotherapy via Telehealth justified?
The surprise finding: There are some clients for whom we can recommend Telehealth with confidence. The caveats are as important to the finding and understanding them is key to sound clinical decisions. This article summarizes the scholarship behind the surprise finding and my explanation for it. The literature citations and interviews are included in the free eBook version of my dissertation, which you can download from my website.
