Despite a significant share of Nigeria’s budget in the health sector, the health status has not improved, as reflected by poor health indicators. Objective. This study investigates the linkages between government expenditure and health outcomes in Nigeria. Methods. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique was used to examine the short- and long-run effects of government health expenditure on health outcomes separately. The health outcome was captured by life expectancy at birth and mortality rate. Results. Findings show a negative relationship exists between health expenditure and mortality rate, implying that a rise in health expenditure leads to a decrease in mortality rate, while life expectancy at birth positively responds to the changes in health expenditure. Conclusions. As a policy recommendation from this study, the government should pursue increasing health expenditure and partner with the private sector in the form of Public-Private Partnerships to i...

Many heavily indebted countries are exposed to external risks especially the exchange rate shocks due to limited use of hedging instruments. We propose alternative financing instruments to minimize sovereign risks and the cost of debt. Our paper uses the standard model for pricing options, the Black-Scholes model to determine the fair value of options. The findings show that barrier options have an added advantage over plain vanilla options because of its knock-ins and knockouts features hence they are the most affordable to use. An important aspect of the effective debt management policies should be on developing local bond market to access alternative financing instruments in the world capital market.

It would never have been realized without events throughout my years as an athlete, student and teacher. I have been lucky to meet and talk with people that have given me support, assistance and inputs, which I am grateful for. I thank ISCTE-IUL and the program for giving me this opportunity and to have taken care of me as an international student. In the course of writing the dissertation I have had the privilege of being supervised by Professor Pedro Figueiredo Neto. Thank you Pedro, for interesting conversations and valuable comments. Your perspectives as an anthropologist have been very beneficial. This dissertation would not have been realized without a number of people I have been so lucky to have in my life. I am thankful to my sport-loving family. With an ever-present element of competition, they have strengthened my fascination to the field of sport. The influence of «one day without physical activity is one day without purpose» have always stayed with me. Thanks to my extended family, which I have been lucky to get to know through sport. From local teams to volunteers, youth sport exchange program and colleagues in physical education, you all have shown me the beautiful values and social community sport can contribute to. A special thanks to my interlocutors who have given me useful insight in the Zambian culture as well. Thanks to my physiotherapist who helped me find my baseline. Thank you Mamma, you have been my biggest supporter throughout my craziest sport projects, adventures, injuries and recoveries. Without our conversations and reflections I would not be here today. You have helped me to stand on my feet and not give up, no matter how dark it has been. And thank you Ricardo, for being the support I need. You give me balance in life and without you this dissertation would not make sense.

Globalization involves interaction, collaboration and integration among individuals, organization... more Globalization involves interaction, collaboration and integration among individuals, organizations, societies, and governments of different nations. Globalization has enhanced progress in various parts of the world in different ways. Over the years, it has promoted access to education, transportation, communication, health facilities, importation and exportation, employment opportunities, revenue for the government and good standard of living for the people. Other aspects of the society that have been greatly influenced by globalization include trade and technology. Advancement in information technology presents new strategies for engaging in globalized economic activities as it facilitates easy transfer of properties, resources, money and collaboration with distant partners. A major negative impact on the society associated with the use of technology in the contemporary time however, is cybercrime. The paper investigates the various forms of cybercrimes, the effects and prevention ...

Funders are under immense pressure to be accountable for the paybacks from funded research.Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to look into the impact of funded biomedical research between the years 2005 and 2015 in Malaysia from the aspects of knowledge production, research targeting and capacity building, as well as health system policy and decision making. Methods: This study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods research design. Biomedical projects related to breast cancer, coronary heart disease, and dengue, funded by the Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), and Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) between the years 2005 and 2015, were included.Findings: From the questionnaire responses (n=58), on average each funded project managed to produce two outputs and one higher degree student. We employ the dynamic fixed effects model to determine the key drivers of sovereign bond spreads. Country-specific effects are fixed and the inclusion of dummy variables using the Bai–Perron multiple structural break test is significant at a 5% level. For robustness, the time-series generalized method of moments (GMM) is used where the null hypothesis of the Sargan Test of over-identifying restrictions (OIR) and the Arellano–Bond Test of no autocorrelation are not rejected. This implies that the instruments used are valid and relevant. In addition, there is no autocorrelation in the error terms. Our results show that the exchange rate, Money supply/GDP (M2/GDP) ratio, and trade are insignificant. Furthermore, our findings indicate that public debt/GDP ratio, GDP growth, inflation rate, foreign exchange reserves, commodity price, and market sentiment are significant at a 5% and 10% level.
