To date this research has indicated that either students prefer print textbooks to e-textbooks or the results are inconclusive. Prior research on the overall acceptance of technology suggested that females are significantly less interested and less accepting of technology as compared to males. Would this continue to be true regarding e-textbooks? In this study a survey of the use and satisfaction with e-textbooks was administered to a group of 250 male and female undergraduate students who had used e-textbooks in one or more of their courses at a regionally accredited Mid-South university. The results of this study indicate there is a significant difference between genders in the likelihood of a student to select an e-textbook over a printed textbook in a future class: males are more likely to choose e-textbooks ...

Health care organizations, in particular, have embraced partnerships and strategic alliances with much intensity, adopting the interorganizational network as the new business model for the health care industry. Yet, empirical evidence of the value of IT to enhance and support interorganizational networks is lacking in the IT literature. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to extend IT theory and research to the interorganizational network level of analysis through an empirical assessment of IT value for the health care integrated delivery system (IDS). This dissertation develops a framework of IT value for the interorganizational network that merges two complementary theoretical concepts, the strategic alignment model and the IT integration life cycle. Primary survey data is combined with secondary IDS...

The healthcare integrated delivery system (IDS) is a distinct example of an interorganizational network. As the economic potential of these markets is now being realized, they are beginning to go mainstream, a trend reflected by the explicit attention crowdfunding has received in the American Jobs Act as a potential avenue for economic growth, as well as the recent focus that regulators such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission have placed upon it. Although the formulation of regulation and policy surrounding crowd-funded markets is becoming increasingly important, the behavior of crowdfunders, an important aspect that must be considered in this formulation effort, is not yet well understood. A key factor that can influence the behavior of crowd funders is information on prior contribution behavior, including the amount and timing of others' contributions, which is published for general consumption. With that in mind, in this study, we empirically examine social influence in a crowd...

Yet, research has not kept pace. This study examines two interrelated needs of healthcare alliance network research—the value of information technology (IT) integration for the IDS and the value of IT integration for the participating hospitals. Hypotheses are developed that relate IT integration to quality and performance outcomes at both the IDS level and at the hospital level. In addition, a taxonomy of hospitals is developed based on size; and the value of IDS IT integration is examined for each hospital quartile. The results of the study suggest that IT integration does indeed have a significant impact on performance in the healthcare industry. In addition, the results suggest that the performance improvements realized at the IDS level of analysis do not extend equally to all hospitals in the IDS.

Lessons learned include equipment requirements, both in the main classroom and remote classrooms, taking insufficient bandwidth into account, remote communications, and accounting for small class sizes. The successes include reaching students where they are, not where we want them to be, and increased enrollment and sustainability. The future of this study includes initiating a policy that requires students to purchase and maintain their own hardware with programs like Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) and Dreamspark supplying the software. Additionally, students that are embracing a field in technology need to have Internet access based on the ubiquitous availability and inexpensive pricing structure for minimal high-speed bandwidth. Today, MBA programs have become even more popular because of a prevalent need for post-Baccalaureate education as a criterion for continued advancement in the workplace. Because MBA programs are not limited to those who hold a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in a business discipline, most programs require completion of a set of undergraduate courses in business fundamentals as a prerequisite to MBA program admission. This requirement often creates a critical barrier to entry for many potential MBA students due to its time and expense. Schools and colleges of business have implemented many different solutions; however, in most cases, the solutions are still expensive, rigid in structure, and require months (often more than a year) to complete. This presentation describes the collaboration between the Gordon Ford College of Business and the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach at Western Kentucky University to create a fully digital, self-paced solution to provide instruction in the business fundamentals necessary for a student entering the MBA program without a BS degree in a business discipline. This single course can be completed in as few as seven weeks or as many as nine months, and the student can select the order and timeline in which to complete the eight subject areas within the course

More specifically, the objectives of this study were to (1) assess student perceptions of technology use in an academic setting and to rank their preferences; (2) determine which resources and communication options available to students and faculty are preferred by students; (3) determine if those preferences change depending upon the reason for communication; and (4) determine if students want to use social media in an academic setting, and if so, in what ways and for what purposes. Using an electronic survey instrument, undergraduate students at a regionally accredited Mid-South university in the United States were asked to rank their preferences regarding the use of eight different communication resources as part of a college course. In addition, students were asked to identify the social media tools they currently use and for what purpose(s), both in and out of the classroom. The results showed that, overall, Facebook was the most commonly used technology, that students use social media primarily for communicating with friends, and email is the preferred method for sending and receiving class-wide and individual communication, and that a learning management system is the preferred method for submitting class assignments and examinations. However, students generally do not want to use social media for academic activities.

In particular, this study examines the strategic fit between IT integration and sophistication and organizational maturity within the healthcare IDS. Secondary data obtained from HIMSS Analytics and the American Hospital Directory for 130 healthcare IDSs currently active in the United States is used to test the relationship between strategic fit and both average length of hospital stay and operational cost. In addition, statistical comparisons are made across two levels of IDS development. The results indicate a shortened length of hospital stay and reduced operational costs when strategic fit is achieved. Further, among those IDSs who have achieved strategic fit, high integration aligned IDSs seem to demonstrate significantly greater performance improvements than low integration aligned IDSs.

We use survey data from 78 matched respondents to answer the question to what extent does IT capability intentions affect a hospital's ability to detect and reduce clinical errors. We investigate empirically the impact of IT capability intentions and IT infrastructure integration on elements of IT-enabled quality of care. Our findings position IT capability intentions as an antecedent to IT infrastructure integration and suggest IT infrastructure integration is the key component in overcoming a highly fragmented delivery system. The degree of IT infrastructure integration has significant effects on quality of care, in terms of both patient-centric responsiveness and error detection and reduction.

However, until now, this has not occurred. In fact, some say that IT in healthcare has consistently fallen far short of expectations. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the need for a more holistic view of healthcare network integration and demonstrate that simply applying the latest technology to the network is not adequate for improving overall effectiveness. The study results showed that the more holistic view has to include management commitment, of complementarity between IT integration and organizational integration, and continued investments.

In such an environment, the need to understand the factors that affect an individual's ability to use technology effectively continues to be of great concern for both researchers and practitioners. This study examines the influence of two factors, math confidence and computer confidence, on the formation of computer self-efficacy (CSE). Structural equation modelling (SEM) is used to test four hypotheses. The results suggest that both math confidence and computer confidence have a direct effect on CSE, while computer confidence partially mediates the relationship between math confidence and CSE. Implications of these findings are discussed. This study extends prior research on CSE by examining the link between math confidence and CSE, a relationship previously unexplored in the literature.
