Whilst a relationship is now generally recognised between the two phenomena, it has been neglected relative to other issues. There are genuine reasons for this, the relationship being fraught with conceptual and empirical problems. Such problems are evident in the writings to date directly on nationalism and sexuality. This discussion attempts to initially disentangle racism and gender from nationalism and sexuality, respectively, before outlining what I consider to be the three major intersections: national sexual stereotypes, sexuality in national conflict and sexuality in nation-building. Each of the intersections are indicated by an assessment of their conceptual relationship, and illustrated by various historical instances.

Hope has distinctive aspects but we consider the findings to be indicative of Wikipedia use at other British universities. First we discuss general issues of Wikipedia use within the university. Second, we examine existing research on Wikipedia use amongst students and academics. Based upon a sample of 133 academics and 1222 students, our princi- pal findings were: (1) 75% of academics and students use Wikipedia; (2) student use is typically confined to the initial stages of assessments; (3) a quarter of academics provide guidance on how to use Wikipedia and (4) 70% of academics use Wikipedia for background information for teaching purposes, something that it is not influenced by whether student use is tolerated or not. Our conclusion is that whilst Wikipedia is now unofficially integrated into universities, it is not ‘the’ information resource as feared by many and that an enlightened minority of academics have attempted to assimilate it into their teaching.

It looks first at the origins of the term. Second, it examines various definitions of RN: in the business press where a zero sum conception of state and corporate interest is generally assumed, related definitions in academic writings that hinge on the relative control of resources by government and company, explanations that subsume the phenomenon within economic nationalism, accounts that stress how it restricts outputs and, finally, recent discussions that question prevailing understandings of RN and emphasise instead the diversity of its contemporary forms. The article then considers drivers of RN: the capture of economic rents, the corollary of the influence of market prices on this objective, obsolescing bargaining, the pressures of natural scarcity and the role of national identity. Fourth, the global context, commercial and legal, in which RN operates. Finally, the article considers the fluctuations in RN in recent years. Policy Implications • Resource nationalisms are, despite cartels, one factor underlying the lack of global regulation of natural resources. An effective global policy, so desperately needed in the context of finite resources and unsustainable warming, would require a transformation in current trading regimes to combine the dynamism of corporate exploration with sustainable priorities. • Resource nationalism is not new. The quest by nation states to benefit from the ownership and control of natural resources within their jurisdiction has a long history and is evident periodically since the mid-twentieth century. • Resource nationalism is a widespread and normal policy of states-especially with energy supply. Such an understanding is at odds with dominant definitions of resource nationalism that assume antagonistic, zero sum, relationship between a state and foreign company involved in the extraction of a natural resource. • There is very little international regulation to limit resource nationalism. The WTO makes limited attempts to involve itself in the resource policy of members. So the determination of trade agreements between states and companies is through bilateral deals.

Having briefly outlined the origination and nature of the Scouts, it considers why Baden-Powell and others thought masturbation to be such a dangerous practice and how they proposed to prevent boys from doing it. It then locates the fears of those in charge of the movement in its historical context, arguing that the warnings of the Scouts that masturbation led to insanity and moral ruin went further than other Edwardian youth organizations and even social purity bodies. Finally, the article attempts to understand the place of masturbation in a wider ethos of continence and health, things that were thought to benefit both a boy and his nation.

The issue arose during research on the British Serbian community when some participants sought to justify, exculpate or reject Serbian liability for atrocity. My initial response not to demur but to simply move onto the next question morally tainted the research, as it seemed to collud in a denial of Serbian responsibility for atrocity in an understanding of war in which the Serbs were always the victim. I discuss, through an extended excerpt from an interview conducted later in the research, my attempt to challenge respondents over this claim. I set the moral and methodological case to object to the denial of atrocity against the practical dangers present in doing so: the risk of a loosing track of the spine of a prepared script of questions as a fruitless argument develops and the intricacies of the subject matter are exposed. But I also allow for an interpretation that would suggest that my response was altogether too cautious. My conclusion, such as one can make one about such a complex matter, is that to object in such a kind of instance is legitimate.

It does this first through providing an appropriate definition of the term. Taking issue with the generalised remit of economic nationalism in recent writings, it suggests that it consists of practices to create, bolster and protect national economies in the context of world markets. Taking this definition, the subsequent history section identifies economic nationalism's rise in the late 19th century, the impetus of crisis after 1929 and its institutionalisation after 1945.

Arnold is to be congratulated for offering an even-handed, interesting and well-informed contribution to the growing field of environmental interpretations of history. In this sense he has succeeded in integrating evolutionary-ecological and historical dynamics and demonstrated that a full understanding of human history and natural history requires an integrated appreciation of both. In the end, because one cannot separate culture from nature one cannot separate nature from history.
