The goals for expanding economic trade within North America while fighting drug and human traffic... more The goals for expanding economic trade within North America while fighting drug and human trafficking, as well as attempting to secure the common borders against terrorism – North America (Canada, Mexico, United States of America), under leadership of the USA, has created an environment that clearly favors capitalism often at the expense of the culture and tradition of indigenous Americans. Intended or not, the autonomy and free movement of indigenous peoples has been greatly compromised since the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on January 1, 1994 and further restricted following the terrorists attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001.

The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of NAFTA on Mexican public policies lead... more The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of NAFTA on Mexican public policies leading to the privatization of ejidos, village-owned lands, and the impact of these policies on migration. The research includes field interviews in one Mexican village to test the effects of these policies and their implications on villagers migration to the United States.

This research explores the role of KBBF-FM, the first Chicano, community-based public radio stati... more This research explores the role of KBBF-FM, the first Chicano, community-based public radio station in the United States. It examines its development based on its own format changes and the current global context of media ownership. Research findings suggest that small, community-based media outlets are still viable alternatives to provide a voice for traditionally disenfranchised segments of the population, particularly the Latino population. In an era of media conglomerates, KBBF serves as a vehicle to promote social justice and adds to the diversity of voices that would not otherwise be heard through the mainstream media in local communities. The research uses primary and secondary bibliographical and field interviews sources for analysis.

It traces the evolution of the Mexican electoral/political system, using the 1987 split within the ruling elite as the backdrop. The author examines these changes and concludes that an incipient democratization process is taking place.

Illegal entry into the USA via the Mexican border has long been a social and political problem pl... more Illegal entry into the USA via the Mexican border has long been a social and political problem plaguing leaders on both sides of the international border. The recent onslaught of thousands unattended children from Guatemala, Salvador, and Honduras has further fueled the political debate again drawing attention to the United State’s double-standard, one for Cubans versus others from Latin America. Using President Obama’s recent amnesty for Mexican children and youth, many families, and coyotes (human traffickers) saw this as an opportunity to escape the poverty and violence in their countries. The authors assess the role of previous US policies that may have contributed to the violence, poverty and social disruption in these countries within the U.S. relevant to the protest against these children and youth entering the country.
