This paper discusses the absence of the causative alternation with psych predicates in English fr... more This paper discusses the absence of the causative alternation with psych predicates in English from a comparative perspective. It argues that English lacks the psych causative alternation due to a combination of factors that have been pointed out independently in the literature, but not discussed in the context of the literature on the causative alternation in the non-psych domain: i) several object experiencer predicates got reanalyzed as subject experiencer verbs, ii) English borrowed new object experiencer predicates from verb classes that do not participate in the causative alternation, and ii) the v as well as the Voice layer of English that participated in the building of these verbs were also affected by changes in their properties.

The article offers a critical review of the literature devoted to the topic of long-distance wh-e... more The article offers a critical review of the literature devoted to the topic of long-distance wh-extraction in Polish, which has posed a perennial problem for the generative theory and as such it has attracted considerable attention in generative literature on the Polish grammar. The first part of the paper covers the discussed extraction data, showing the complexity of extraction possibilities with respect to a sentential complement type. In the second part, major accounts of the problem are reviewed: from solutions based on bounding theory to analyses grounded in minimalist syntax. Finally, the problem of acceptability judgments of long-distance wh-extractions in Polish is discussed to show how difficult it is to establish the level of .acceptability of such structures.

The article explores the status of żeby-clauses in the Polish mood system. Clauses introduced by ... more The article explores the status of żeby-clauses in the Polish mood system. Clauses introduced by the complex complementizer żeby defy a unified description and traditional Polish grammars classify them either as indicative or conditional/subjunctive. The paper provides evidence that żeby-clauses can be classified as irrealis on the basis of their temporal properties. Furthermore, żeby-clauses introduced by non-veridical verbs share affinities with the subjunctive structures in other languages; specifically, they exhibit subjunctive-related phenomena, such as obviation effects. The present discussion also gives more general insights into the traditional mood classification in Polish and its problems.
