This was quite evident in the transatlantic slave trade and how African male slaves were marketed and sold to their captors. Deeply ingrained in cultural belief systems, we see this presently in how African American males are viewed in athletics, music, and even Hollywood. These early identifications continued throughout history in reference to gender socialization, stereotypes, and media perceptions of African American males. Expanded into modern-day society, such stereotypes have been detrimental in how African American males are perceived by other racial and ethnic groups, and specifically law enforcement. African American males were historically socialized, forcefully through slavery to be submissive , obedient, and enduring, particularly for the purposes of the intense labor needed for their daily work in the fields and on the plantations. The stronger the appearance of the slave (mesomorph), the more appealing he was for purposes of working. This process of submission and obedience continued well into postslavery, with postmodern realities.

In Dr. Urbina’s text, Hispanics in the U.S. Criminal Justice System: The New Demography, he offers the reader a historical and in-depth analysis of Latino/Latinas from various perspectives within the criminal justice system. The author conveys his analysis in four sections focusing on the following:

School shootings are rare but that impor - tant fact is lost in the debate and political rhetoric. What is also atypical are school shootings involving minority students and even more uncommon school shootings at minority schools. However, minority students have disproportionately experienced the latent effects of these policies. Few studies have offered systematic theoretical explanations for racial disciplinary disproportionality. This chapter outlines a theoretical argument using the “focal concerns” perspective to link the latent impact of the politiciza - tion of school shootings to continued racial disproportionality in school discipline. The discussion and analysis show the role of the politicization of school shootings has played in redefining and expanding the definition of school violence or school misbehaviors. Policy suggestions based in socio-political and psychological frameworks are also outlined.

This study was designed to investigate the impact of the Criminal Justice Transfer Learning Community experience on its participants' level of identified stressors over time and their means of coping with those stressors. The Criminal Justice Transfer Learning Community extended for two terms, and was designed to facilitate students' integration into the university and the criminal justice community. Students in the learning community were asked on multiple occasions to identify stressors and rate their intensity. According to the students, the largest impact on stress reduction was the feeling of belonging to their learning community cohort and the university community.
