The Meanings:

1) Gender swap. By some method, the character transforms into the gender opposite his or hers.
2) Transformation (animals). The character transforms into an animal. This is distinct from the Supernatural Creature category.
3) Transformation (inanimate). The character transforms into an inanimate object.
4) Wings. The character either has, or gains during the course of the story, at least one wing.
5) Tentacles! At some point in the story, there are...tentacles, lewd or otherwise. Take it from there.
6) Mpreg. A male character becomes pregnant by some agency--spores, egg laying, "this runs in the family", ass babies, omgwtf did the baby come from?
7) High school AU. Regardless of their ages, races, powers, place in history, or planet of origin, all the characters attend high school together.
8) Apocalypse Now. Or possibly then, or possibly not quite yet--either way, it's a story about the end of the world.
9) Supernatural (creatures). The characters either transform into, or are centrally involved with, supernatural creatures (examples: ghosts, vampires, faeries).
10) Supernatural (powers). The characters either gain or are centrally involved with beings who have supernatural powers (examples: telepathy, three wishes, leaping tall buildings in a single bound.)
11) Fantasy AU (traditional). Sir Gryffin of Dor rode out to meet his secret love, Sally Zar. Think Mercedes Lackey (only better).
12) Fantasy AU (urban). So there was this place, see, where all the lost kids went. They called it Neverneverland, but it was really just another city unless you knew where to look. Think Emma Bull.
13) Fuck or Die. For some reason, two (or more) characters are in a dangerous predicament from which the only escape is having sex.
14) Pornstars. At least one of the characters is involved in the pornography industry.
15) Hookers. At least one of the characters sells sex for money.
16) You see, I woke up gay. One of the characters wakes up with an attraction to his or her own gender.
17) Trading Places. This refers to 'swap' fic of any kind but genderswap. Switch around members of TV shows, actors with characters, band members with other band members, past people for future, evil for good, twin for twin, you name it.
18) Forced Union. One of the characters is forced by circumstance to make some kind of commitment to another. (examples: marriage or civil union, a 'date' won through a contest, a fake relationship for publicity).
19) Timeshift. At least one of the characters is temporarily out of his or her "home" time due to some agency.
20) Aliens. Aliens appear, or are featured, in this story.
21) Doppelganger. Either someone in the story has a double, or the doppelganger concept is central.
22) Twins or Non-canon Siblings. Either a character who lacks a twin or sibling in canon has one in the story, or two characters are related who, in canon, are not. (example: an AU in which, based only on superficial resemblance, Orlando Bloom is the third Eppes brother.) Incest is not a requirement of this prompt.
23) Out of Time. This story is set in a time other than is canon for the fandom--choose future or past.
24) Slaves. Someone in the story is a slave. Use your own definition within the basic concept--there are many kinds of slavery.
25) Media Crossover. There are several types of media. (Books, movies, and television are a few.) This fic has to be written with characters from at least two different mediums. (example: Dean Winchester/John Constantine.)
26) Spies and Agents. At least one of your characters is a spy or a secret agent.
27) OMG we forgot ___. Writer's choice. Because there's always one more.

FAQ:

1) What's this table stuff?

Authors need to write 27 stories that fulfill the prompts on the table above (unless all stories contain rare pairings or unusual crossovers--see FAQ #10).
Explanations of each term on the table are located beneath it. Code for the table is available upon request.

2) Where do I post?

For challenge purposes, you must post your fic to the community as it's completed. After seven prompts are filled, you can put links to them in your personal
copy of the table and send that to us for central linking.

3) Can I post wtf27 fics in my own journal?

Yes. They're yours to do with what you please.

4) Can I crosspost fics from other challenges here?

Yes, as long as they fit a prompt.

5) Can I post fics that I've previously written if they fit the prompts on the table?

If you must use old material, either do significant editing or restrict it to five or fewer prompts. The goal of this challenge is to produce fresh new fiction. If you wish to fill prompts with new parts to a previously written fic, feel free, but please link
to the source.

6) Do I have to write a distinct story for each prompt, or can some/all of them be connected?

If you can figure out a way to write a single story--or even a few--that fulfill all of these prompts, you are the CRACKMASTER OF THE UNIVERSE. We see a great future for you at nifty.org. We wouldn't deny you that opportunity, but the odds are that it'll
be easier to do each prompt as a distinct fic or write multipart stories only for closely related concepts (like Supernatural Creatures and Supernatural Powers).

7) How long does each story have to be?

Stories must be at least 271 words long. Why? Because it makes you go "wtf?".

8) What format do I use to post my story?

Title:
Author:
Fandom(s):
Pairing (if applicable):
Rating (use the MPAA as a guideline):
Warnings (if any):
Author's Note (if any):

Keep the warnings and notes to a short sentence or two. Stories longer than 271 words must be posted behind a cut tag: < lj-cut > text of story < /lj-cut >
(removing the spaces between the > and < symbols and the text). Stories posted to the community may not contain graphics, animated gifs, scrolling or colored text, or any feature that alters the community's format. If you are linking to an outside page, even your own journal, please warn readers that the tag is a link. Do not link to locked posts.

9) Do I have to sign up for a specific character or a fandom?

Nope! In fact, we encourage you to embrace the crack. Experiment with numerous fandoms and unusual crossovers.

10) What do I get if I embrace the crack?

Our respect. Also, authors who complete every single prompt with a rare pairing may select only their 20 favorite prompts to call their tables complete. Authors who choose to write traditional pairings (canon crossovers, canon pairings, pairings that have been written more than five times within a given fandom) must complete all 27 prompts to finish the challenge. If you write gen, every single fic must be a rare crossover or rare fandom story for you to get the benefit of only having to write 20.

11) What's 'rare'?

Rare, for our purposes, means that there are fewer than five readable stories in that crossover universe (say, CSI/Gundam Wing) or fewer than ten readable stories in that fandom. (Readable, for our purposes, means 'not all written by the same thirteen year old under ten different aliases on ff.net', or alternately, 'not translated from Urdu by Babelfish', or alternately 'not crappy'.) In the case of slash or het stories, 'rare' is expanded to include an unusual crossover, a pairing for which there are fewer than five readable stories within a given fandom, a pairing in a fandom for which there are fewer than ten total stories, or an intermedia crossover pairing.

12) What about original characters?

No more than one of your stories may contain a fandom character paired with an original one, though if you write only one fic with an original character (say,
for the Twins prompt) you are not disqualified for the embrace-the-crack benefit of having to write only 20.

13) What about original fiction?

Because of possible copyright issues and because it takes much of the 'challenge' part out of the challenge, original fiction is not allowed. Sorry!

14) Can I write het/slash/gen?

Yes. You may write slash, gen, or het stories for this challenge. Anything that's fan fiction goes.

15) Are there restrictions on content?

There are no restrictions on content, but submissions to this community are moderated. If your story doesn't have the proper header with warnings and ratings displayed, we won't accept it.

16) Sounds fairly normal so far...why the "wtf" title?

Read the prompts, and wonder no more! These are types of fic that many people in fandom call "crack". The goal of this challenge is to produce good crack--rare pairings, strange crossovers and odd subject matter written well. The broadest interpretation should be put on the prompts, and you should keep the goal of uniqueness in mind when it comes to theme. If one of your fandoms contains canon aliens, try not to think "Hey, that'll make the aliens prompt easy!" Find a fresh way to explore the concept.

17) When's this thing due?

As in similar challenges, never! You can take the rest of your life to finish. If you need a deadline, we advise shooting for 27 months. Or 271.

18) If there's no fandoms to reserve and no deadline, why should I join?

Many authors write more and better stories if they have direction, discipline, and a sense of community. Committing to a challenge and writing within its rules
can be the spur you need to step outside the box. If you'd like to do the prompts without joining, feel free, but if you plan to post to the community we'd like an idea of how many writers will participate. We want to be the best possible mods for you.

Sound good? Reply to the first post in the community with the secret word (CRACK) in your subject line. When we receive your post, we'll approve you, and the fun begins.
