Navigating the Atlantic long before Odysseus, 2024

The British navigation expert Eva Taylor (1) said that “the first seaman of whom we are actually told that he steered by the stars is Odysseus. We may be sure that his exploits embody the traditional method of seafaring of a still older day than Homer’s.”
The ancient geographer Strabo (2) argued strongly that Homer’s Oceanus was not the sea around Greece, or the Mediterranean Sea, but most likely the Atlantic Ocean beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
This paper is the result of my own investigative voyage into the
meaning of the stars, the constellations, and Oceanus in Homer’s poems.

Star Pillars are a vertical pair of two stars at the horizon either at rise or set. The method is based on four songs: the song of Rua Nui on the Birth of the Heavenly Bodies and the map of Tupaia from Tahiti (Pacific) as well as on Homer’s poems of about 2800 years ago with Calypso’s sailing instruction to Odysseus and Achilles’ shield showing constellations and a circular Okeanos (Atlantic Ocean). The method is comparable to latitude sailing. Sailors were master navigators using the same characteristics of the sea and the sky on both oceans.

The growers of protected crops try to meet these requirements by developing so-called closed growing systems. Two other approaches in the policy are a substantial reduction of the volume of pesticides used and a very critical evaluation of the pesticides permitted. In this governmental policy, Integrated Pest Management has shown prospects in horticulture; it will play a very important role in the near future but is now considered as part of the broader concept of Integrated Production Systems. The glasshouse industry is very actively developing its own strategy to satisfy government targets and market demands for high-quality products produced by environmentally safe methods. The vegetable auctions have developed a policy of environmentally conscious production which should put the vegetable industry into a strong marketing position for its produce.

This message might be oral history told by seafarers in the Bronze Age around 1400 BC. But this has never been tested on several seas such as the Greek waters and Mediterranean sea or the Atlantic Ocean.
In this study a hypothesis is developed that the Odyssey is sailed at the Atlantic Ocean. An important part of the evidence is the use of stars in navigation. Especially the star Boötes is essential as an instruction to another latitude. This latitude is only possible at the Atlantic Ocean and when used at the Mediterranean you will end in the desert of the Sahara. In this study parts of Polynesian knowledge on star navigation is used.
A comparison is made with the routes of the Phoenicians around 500 BC and Columbus at 1500 AD

There is much speculation, but no proof. By using an innovation approach Achilles' shield is analysed in a radical new way: this shield is not a decorated weapon, but a source of information. Several details on the shield (metals, constellations, circular Oceanus) shed new light on famous events in Homer’s poems. This ultimately leads to the discovery of Troy and Ithaca at the Atlantic coast and the Odyssey at the Atlantic Ocean.
