West Virginia (original) (raw)

Average isn't all that

Illinois is the "most average state" in America. It was given this distinction by the Associated Press, which analyzed data from the U.S. census, looking at things like income and age and race, as well as education, immigration, rural population percentages and more than a dozen other factors. The Associated Press concluded that Illinois mirrored the makeup of the country as a whole better than any other state. Second was Oregon, and then Michigan, and Washington, and Delaware.

The "least average state" in the Union: West Virginia.

We might be a lot of things, but at least we ain't average.

Marching band goodness!

I'm the second new mantainer for this community, so I'm stopping to say Hello! I hope that if the community shows up a couple of times on your friends page maybe you'll feel the urge to post here as well.

There's a lot of football going on in West Virginia right now! Some of it is pretty good - and some of it is pretty bad. I attended the Nitro/Hurricane game last night, and sat on the Nitro side. Now that was a sad game. But the games are a social opportunity for me, so I enjoyed it anyway.

Marching bands are shrinking! Some folks say band is on the way out. What do you think?

Tonight my buddy and I attended the last WV Power game of the season that included fireworks. I just love those Friday night games. For eight bucks you get a game at our sweet little Power park AND fireworks. Can't be beat. I even won a hat! There are still a few games left so you should get your tickets soon. Sports aren't a big interest of mine, but there's just something special about a night(or day) out at the ballpark. Get a hot dog, grab a beer, good times. And I guess football season is here now. Does a school band near you have a great marching band this season? I'd love to see video of local marching bands. I especially like drumlines. Or maybe your kid's a football star. Have video? This is the place to share it!

Howdy, folks!

My friend sapphirescarlet and I noticed that this community seemed a little neglected. This made us sad, as we are proud West Virginians. We think that this should be a space that encourages sharing news and events about our beautiful state. We'd like for you to tell us what's going on. Share your news! As for me, I recently took a zipline canopy tour of the New River Gorge. It was fantastic.

Next up, I plan to walk across the famed bridge - on the catwalk! Even if your plans aren't so ambitious, we want to hear your stories. What's going on in WV? What's your life like? This community is officially back in business! Invite your friends. We want stories!

Anyone want this community?

Fortunately or perhaps unfortunately for me, I'm relocating to the Charleston area. I've spent a sparse amount of time there for the last few months as initial feelers but haven't ventured very far outside of the three blocks surrounding the hotel. In any case, I need some advice. For the first two to three months I'll be living in a hotel and there after I'll be looking for a small flat. I'd prefer to live in the downtown area, as I'm working down there and currently do not commute via a car (I loath dealing with traffic, so a bikeable/walkable commute is far superior for me).
That said, what are some hip spots in that area to rent from? lofts and studio apartments are prefered but not a requirement.
Also, anyone care to list some dive bars? I found one or two that I liked but am open to more suggestions, especially if they are downtown.

And finally, something to do in the huge city of Charleston? I like a lot of expirimental/noise music and prefer to dive into that scene when present.

Thanks for your time!
