Mappanre temme: Meaning Construction of Khatam Al-Qur’an Tradition in Buginese Community of South Sulawesi

This research is motivated by the presence of the community tradition of Bulutellue, Sinjai, South Sulawesi which is inherited from generation to generation. This tradition is known as mappanre temme, which is a crowded event related to expressions of gratitude and joy by families because their children have successfully finished reading the Koran. The purpose of this study is to explain the position of the Koran in the socio-cultural space, the implementation and function of mappanre temme for the people of Bulutellue, Sinjai, South Sulawesi. The research method used is qualitative research using a religious anthropological approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews and documentation. The data that has been collected is then analyzed so that it has the ability to read the verses contained in the Koran. From the Indigeneous to the Religious Practices: Islamic Construction of the Local Tradition in South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Islam and indigenous tradition in Indonesia have long established interconnected relations in both social and ritual practices. This study elaborates on the Islamic construction of the indigenous Bugis-Makassar tradition. The "Haji Bawakaraeng" is one the familiar practice and is believed to exist in the South Sulawesi region. Term Haji Bawakaraeng is a religious practice contained with local Muslim beliefs carried out on Mount Bawakaraeng. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection done through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. This study finds that the Bugis-Makassar habit of carrying out a series of rituals on the summit of Mount Bawakaraeng is an old belief facing the process of negotiation and adaptation to the teachings of Islam. The presence of the term Hajj as an Islamic construction and Bawakaraeng as a local cultural construction is the result of the construction of Islam on the local beliefs of the Buginese-Makassarnese. In addition, this study also illustrates the dynamics of the inclusion of Islam in South Sulawesi as a variative and authentic inclusion. Finally, this study explains the diversity of the Bugis-Makassar people which tends to change from indigenous traditions to religious practices due to the ongoing construction of Islam. This paper recommends the need for further studies on the issue of religious and cultural relations at the micro level to see the dynamics of changing socio-religious practices in the community.

Islamic Dialectics and Local Cultural Transformation in the Matajang Community, Enrekang Regency

This article aims to (i) describe the dialectic of Islam with local culture in the Matajang community. (2) describe the form of local cultural transformation as a result of dialectics with Islam in the Matajang community. This research is qualitative with a single case study design. Marjambar as a Symbolic Interaction of the Bunga Bondar Society in Sipirok District - North Sumatra

Bunga Bondar Village has a unique culture called Marjambar. Marjambar is held by distributing pastries typical of the local community during religious holidays, which are ahead of Eid al-Fitr for Muslims and one day before New Year for Christians. The study attempts to look Islam as a religion which teaches various aspects of normative and humanism has undergone a process of acceptance and rejection in the society. Meanwhile, tradition as an identity of a particular community also has undergone an eclectic process in acquiring adaptation with the Islamic teachings. It proves that Islam is not merely understood as a doctrine but also as a result of the interaction of cultural values, norms, and morals representing in the forms of religious practices which tolerates the local values. The meeting between Islamic value and local tradition value are maintained. Then, they form Islamic narrated activities as a form of internalization of the teachings and community behaviors. Caram Seguguk tradition in South Sumatera is one of the results of the harmonization between Islam and local traditions in daily activities.

The Kiai’s Cultural Strategy in Shaping the Religious Culture of the Community of Temboro Magetan Village, East Java

Religious culture in the village of Temboro, which made it is known as "Kampung Madinah", certainly did not happen suddenly, but there was a process of formation and role of Kiai and Pesantren Al-Fatah. This study aims to analyze the Kiai’s cultural strategy in developing a religious culture using a phenomenological approach and collects data through in-depth interviews, active participant observation, and documentation. The study results show that, firstly, ideological culture is the strategy of the Kiai in shaping the religious culture of the Temboro community. Secondly, the ideological culture of the Tablighi Jamaat has an impact on changing the five religious cultures of the Temboro community, namely: (1) ideological faith, (2) normative Islam, (3) Sufistic religious experience, (4) moderate-textual religious knowledge, (5) Maqami-intiqali practice.

The approach of literary sociology is one of the literary approaches that specialize in the study of literary works taking into account social aspects of society. Mubalig Kondang [1] is interesting to study because it tells how the author’s expression of the religiosity problem that existed in the society of the Javaneses antri (students of traditional Islamic boarding school in Java) in particular, as well as Indonesia in general. Pengajian (mass teaching of Islam in the village) that becomes the habits and traditions of the santri community as well as the symbol of the author’s heart disclosure. A Trust from the Ancestors: Islamic Ethics and Local Tradition in a Syncretistic Ritual in East-Central Sulawesi

Molabot Tumpe is a unique traditional ritual that binds together Batui and Banggai, two geographically distant Muslim communities of East-Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The ritual consists of an annual offering of maleo bird eggs by the inhabitants of Batui to the élite of the old Banggai sultanate. Originating in tribute-giving ceremonies and ancestral cults, the purpose of the ritual is now understood and explained in thoroughly Islamised ethical terms.
