Emergency room is one of challenges rooms in regard to the resulting of distress and anxiety of patients and their relatives. The anxiety level in family members is varied, including depression. 1 The impact of distress and anxiety are destruction of communication among family members and these will result to inability to concentrate and insufficiency of coping mechanism. 2 As a result, the changes of emotional status of the family members are ABSTRACT Background: Critical condition of patient is trigger to the increasing of anxiety of family members. This situation is vulnerable of ineffective nursing care services provide by nurses in emergency room. Communication is one of abilities which nurse have to performed, and is recognized not that simple in its implementation. This study aimed was to identify whether or not there is a relationship between communications performed by the nurses and the level of anxiety of family members of patient in Emergency Room dr. Dradjat Prawiranegara hospital, Serang Banten, Indonesia. Methods: This study was cross-sectional study with non-parametric analysis data used was Spearman's Rho. Data were collected through direct observation by 4 numerators and observational sheet of nurse's communication. Level of anxiety of family members was measuring by using State Trait Anxiety Inventory Y-1. Data were collected from 47 family members and 47 nurses who were selected by using accidental sampling technique. Results: The study revealed that nurses performed eye contact, well informed consent, quick respond to the needs of patient and family members, clear voice, understandable language, introducing them self, active listening and emphatic, calm and friendly. Regarding anxiety of family members, 42.6% of them were showing moderate level of anxiety, whereas 34.0% of them were showing low level of anxiety. In bivariate analysis by using Spearman's Rho showed that p value was 0.000 and coefficient correlation-0.765. It was indicated that there was significantly relationship between communication of emergency nurses and the level of anxiety of family members. It was indicated that the more effective the communication performed by nurses, the less the anxiety level of family members. Conclusions: Nurse is required to be able to perform their therapeutic communication skill effectively so that the anxiety level of family members is decreasing. As a result, the stable emotion of family members affect to the appropriate decision making of medical treatment.

Predictors of therapeutic communication between nurses and hospitalized patients

Background: Therapeutic communication is a purposeful interaction between health professionals and patients that helps to achieve positive health outcomes. There is a pressing need for research examining factors influencing effective implementation of therapeutic communication in relation to patient-centered care and satisfaction. Objective: This study was aimed at determining the effective implementation of therapeutic communication and its predictors. Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted at the Jimma University Specialized Hospital from March 21 to April 9, 2016. One hundred ninety two patients were recruited using stratified sampling. A questionnaire was used to collect data. One-way ANOVA for mean difference by socio-demographic characteristics, simple and multivariable linear regressions were conducted. Results: The study revealed that 67(34.9%) of the patients rated high level of therapeutic communication. Significant predictors of therapeutic communication implementation were educational status (β ¼ 5.87, P ¼ 0.011), language difference (β ¼-6, P ¼ 0.014), education difference (β ¼ 5.21, P ¼ 0.010) and perceived patient view score (β ¼ 3.57, P˂0.001). Conclusion: Therapeutic communication was poorly implemented. Education, language difference, education difference and perceived patient view scores were significant predictors of therapeutic communication.

Effective and skillful communication is a crucial and an important element when it comes to the quality of care. The aim of the study was to examine the perceived barriers to effective therapeutic communication among nurses and patients at Kumasi South Hospital. The study employed a descriptive study design using a quantitative approach to collect data. The study population was made up of registered general nurses and patients at the emergency, medical, surgical and recovery units of Kumasi South Hospital who were conveniently sampled. A sample of 72 registered general nurses and 40 patients were used for the study and data was collected by administering structured closed-ended questionnaires. The findings revealed that workload on the part of nurses and anxiety, pain and physical discomfort of the patient were the main perceived barriers to therapeutic communication. No significant difference was found in perceived barriers between the male and female groups (t = −1.382, p = .149) and perceived barriers among different age groups of respondents (F = 1.132, df = 3, p = .171). The hospital authorities should ensure that nursing workload is reduced in order to facilitate effective therapeutic communication.

Communication is vital in nursing for several crucial reasons like patient care, patient safety, building trust, patient education, team collaboration, conflict resolution, advocacy etc., Successful communication in nursing involves more than just sharing information; it also entails developing rapport, guaranteeing patient safety, encouraging comprehension, and fostering productive teamwork, all of which are critical to providing patients with high-quality care. Nurses use therapeutic communication techniques to facilitate clients' awareness of their thoughts and feelings and mutually develop goals and an individualized plan of care. Nurses provide reflective and nonjudgmental feedback to clients to help them clarify their thoughts, goals, and coping strategies 1. Absolutely, numerous research studies highlight the critical importance of effective communication in nursing practice. The majority of research continually demonstrates the critical role that good communication plays in nursing, both in terms of enhancing patient outcomes and satisfaction and fostering a more secure and cooperative healthcare environment. These results highlight how crucial it is to incorporate communication skills into nursing practice and education in order to improve care quality overall.

BACKGROUND Communication is key to understanding the emotional state of critical care patients. OBJECTIVE To analyze the effectiveness of the communicative intervention known as CONECTEM, which incorporates basic communication skills and augmentative alternative communication, in improving pain, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in critical care patients transported by ambulance. METHODS This study had a quasi-experimental design with intervention and control groups. It was carried out at 4 emergency medical centers in northern Spain. One of the centers served as the intervention unit, with the other 3 serving as control units. The nurses at the intervention center underwent training in CONECTEM. Background: Communication with the patient is an essential part and the common dimension among all nursing care. The nurse communicates with the patient in several ways and the most important one is the therapeutic communication and the nurse must learn to do it well. Objectives: study aims to assess knowledge of nurses concerning therapeutic communication, determine therapeutic communication levels for who works in psychiatric hospitals and find out the relations between the therapeutic communication and age of nurses, educational levels, and time working. Methodology: Descriptive study was carried out from 1-11-2015 to 1-3 2016, the study was conducted in psychiatric teaching hospitals (Ibn Rushed &Al-Rashad) in Baghdad city. The sample of the study consisted of 48 nurses working in psychiatric hospitals selected according to the criteria of the study sample. A questionnaire was constricted by the researcher. It consist of (64) items. The content validity of the questionnaire was established through penal of 15 experts. Reliability of the study was 83% percentage data was analyzed by Cronbach's alpha. Result: the highest percent 52.1% for educational level was graduated from secondary nursing school; the experiences of nurses in psychiatric hospital, 45.8% are working for five years, the highest present is moderate level in therapeutic communication 64.3%. Conclusion: the study concluded that there were poor levels in nurse's knowledge about therapeutic communication. Recommendation: The study is recommended to developing the teaching programs and training courses.
