The article analyzes two examples of restoration socialist era railway station buildings and monumental art works. The difficulty of restoration with the reconstruction of Kyiv railway station building was that during the Second World War it was partially destroyed and many structures were in disrepair; the finishing technique of exterior facades and interiors has been changed several times. In the station building centre under the lobby a new flooring of metal structures was arranged, escalators were arranged, the roof was replaced with a copper one with existing structures reinforcement. The stages of restoration and repair works of the upper and lower pavilions of the Warszawa Powiśle railway station are analyzed. In 2008–2009, the upper pavilion was renovated to restore the original appearance. The stone floor and glass back wall made of glass blocks were replaced with new ones. In 2009, the lower pavilion of the Warszawa Powiśle railway station was converted into a cafe-club wi...
During the last decade heavy interventions on historic monuments are faced, that go beyond the level of the ordinary conservation and restoration or partial reconstruction, thus putting on the table the question of the preservation or rehabilitation within the contemporary society, through their total monumental reconstruction. There are cases that these methods instead of supporting the values of authenticity, on the contrary, they jeopardize them, disputing, by this way, the most essential criterion for the evaluation of the historic monument.
Reuse of Historical Train Station Buildings: Examples from the World and Turkey
The alterations occurring in social building due to developing technology and globalism also affect architecture by resulting in the conservation, rehabilitation and reuse of the architectonic buildings. Among the buildings that will be conserved, the industrial heritage is one of the most significant conservational topics which previously had no interest but testified a great period of time. Today, the contribution of industrialization to the social life together with architecture can also be observed by the help of these buildings. Meanwhile, the railway buildings are the first industrial heritage buildings built widespread in all countries by the invention of the locomotive. The ones that are still alive today have been re-built or restored in parallel to the developing technology and continued their original functions by the help of new additions adopted on these buildings. This situation is also same for Turkey. The objective of this paper is to give information about the reuse...

There are more than a hundred historic public buildings in the centre of Wrocław, adapted to fulfill modern commercial function. Against the background of today’s cosmopolitan shopping centers and office buildings, these buildings are distinguished by stylish architecture, maintained in eclectic, Art Nouveau or modernist forms. In the process of renewal of such monumental buildings, there is a need to reconcile the requirement for maximum protection of the historic material with safety and comfort of use. The multi-disciplinary construction design constituting the basis for the adaptive reuse of the heritage building must be preceded by conservation research and concept designs simulating possible program options. This allows linking the assessment of the value of the architecture with a choice of the matching function corresponding to the location and historic structure of the building. The further multi-disciplinary design process and implementation of such a project should be bas...

At the beginning of the economic transformation in Poland, buildings constructed after 1945 were treated as symbols of an unacceptable system. Currently, the modernist architecture of the twentieth century is seen as an important element of historical and cultural heritage. However, the problem of its protection against a number of adverse events that may lead to the loss of its essential values and often result in its destruction has been recently growing. The spectacular examples include demolition of the railway station in Katowice (built in 1964-1972) or the reconstruction of a part of the historic structure forced by the protests of various parties. Therefore, the authors attempted to identify the key factors for determining the assessment methods of modernist buildings, and to find possible ways of their transformations. At the same time, it is essential to indicate the significant risks that result both from the lack of understanding of the needs to protect the selected objec...
Conservation of Historic Buildings
he primary motive for historical restoration is always the Education. And to let everyone visualize the culture, society and tradition of place. The preservation safeguards the community and its heritage and make it uncommitted for communal and educational activities. The preservation shows that how much far we have travelled and travelling from where towards which direction. This can be better understood if categorized under 'economic’, 'cultural', and 'environmental', although they are not mutually exclusive and indeed, they are often interlocked. The melodic theme to introduce research paper is to concentrate the attention towards the preservation of the historic buildings to save cultural and traditional values and find out the construction techniques and materials for its best survival.
The progressive modernization of the railway infrastructure has caused many lines (both active and disused) to progressively leave apart a series of railway buildings (some of them, architectural and civil engineering elements of great value), with their use already obsolete or without the main function which they were intended for. The high cost of maintenance leads them to a progressive state of margination, neglect and decay. This paper discusses various elements of the railway heritage, particularly the stations and their auxiliary buildings, their context and the way to put them in value, according to the needs of the society and the territory in which they are set. The railway heritage represents potentially an added value that can be assumed, correctly managed, be the drive shaft of a new function that ensures the future of the stations and serve as the main driving force and enhancer for the active development of a community or territory. For this, the analysis of the territorial strategy, the new energetic and social model and the existing potential in the closer areas will play a key role in achieving, through a new strategic role demanded by society, a self-management of architectural (constructed) railway heritage.

The rational and intuitive trends in projects of reconstructing historical development were extracted in Poland during the period of the transformation in 1989 and during German reunification in 1990. These projects were subordinated to the adopted rules of restoration programs to restore the damaged space systems and to reconstruct of the most valuable development. A reconstruction of shattered historical cities forms a contrast with the modernist concepts of shaping an urban space. A redefining of the radical trends of the avant-garde movement of the modern style were discussed after a few decades and resulted in a trend of returning to traditional aspects of the beauty in all the form as well as returning to the classic rules of composing the façade and the urban complex development. During extensive reconstruction programs the return trends tend to reach the “sources” – a reconstruction of forms of classical architectural styles (of demolished objects that constitute national cu...
