Awareness of breast cancer risk factors and practice of breast self examination among female undergraduates in university of Nigeria Enugu campus

Open Journal of Nursing

Breast cancer patients generally have low rates of survival due to being diagnosed at advanced stages raising critical issues about prevention and avoidance of risk factors. Breast self examination makes women more "breast aware", which in turn may lead to an earlier diagnosis of breast cancer. In Nigeria, the statistics of breast cancer have overtaken cancer of the cervix to become the commonest malignancy in women. This study was carried out to determine the awareness of breast cancer risk factors and practice of breast self examination among female students of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. The descriptive survey design was used for the study. The population of the study was all the female students that reside in hostels in the campus (2400) in number. A sample of 240 students was selected using quota sampling technique. Structured questionnaires based on the research objectives were used for data collection. The results of the study showed that most of the students have little knowledge of breast cancer risk factors and majority of the students do not practice BSE monthly. It was recommended that there should be regular organization of seminars and workshops for students to address sensitive topics like breast cancer risk factors and breast self examination.

Knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self examination and breast cancer among female medical students in Taif, Saudi Arabia

Open Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2014

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Different studies conducted in the Kingdom have shown that knowledge of females regarding breast cancer is poor. Aim of the study was to determine knowledge, attitude and practice among students of Saudi female medical university towards Breast Self Examination (BSE) and also to explore their knowledge about breast cancer. Research Methodology: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at Faculty of Medicine, Taif University during October 2013. Sample size was 378 with mean age of 19.9 ± 1.5. A self administrated questionnaire was used to obtain data about knowledge, attitude and practice towards BSE and knowledge about breast cancer. Data were collected and fed to SPSS version 16. Shape of distribution for numerical data was tested by using one sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Chi-Square Test & Fissure Exact Test (FET) were used for testing relation between categorical variables while correlation analysis was used to test the strength of relation between numeric variables. Main Results: The study revealed that only 8.2% of participants had good overall knowledge about breast cancer and BSE. Although 66% of the study sample had positive attitude towards BSE, only 17% reported that they practiced BSE monthly. A significant positive moderate correlation was found between overall knowledge score and attitude towards BSE (r = 0.449 & p = 0.000). The same was for the frequency of BSE practice but it was found to be in a weak magnitude (r = 0.223 & p = 0.000). Conclusion and Recommendations: Although there was lack of knowledge about breast cancer and BSE yet, positive attitude towards BSE was encouraging. Most female medical students in our sample did not perform BSE or perform it irregularly. Therefore, more intensified awareness programs among students of medical university are necessary to keep in view their current status of breast cancer and BSE knowledge. Further researches are needed to identify causes of inadequate knowledge and practice of BSE among medical students in Taif.

Malaysia is one of the countries that have the highest mortality rate of breast cancer among other countries in Asia. Therefore, breast self-examination (BSE) is encouraged in every country including Malaysia to increase the detection of any breast abnormalities at an early stage and decrease the incidence of cancer presented at a late stage. This study aims to assess the level of Health Sciences students' knowledge and practice of BSE as well as to investigate the association between knowledge and practice of BSE. A crosssectional study was conducted among female students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, UniSZA. An adapted questionnaire was distributed online using Google Forms to assess the knowledge and practice of BSE. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse sociodemographics, knowledge and practice on BSE while the Chi-Square test was used to determine the association between knowledge and practice of BSE among the respondents. A total of 288 female students participated in this study. The mean age was 21.4 ± 1.8 years old and most of them are single (99%). Most of the respondents (61%) have moderate knowledge of BSE, while 35% and 4% of respondents have good knowledge and poor knowledge, respectively. Among 288 participants, 93.4% have heard about BSE, but only 61% of people who have heard of BSE have performed it before. Besides, there was a significant association between knowledge and practice of BSE (χ² = 38.835, p =<0.001). Practice of BSE significantly related to its knowledge. Continuous awareness campaigns must be held through various platforms to educate the public and encourage them to practice BSE as their monthly routine for the early detection of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness and Practice of Breast Self-Examination among Female Medical

Breast cancer is the commonest life-threatening cancer in women worldwide. Regular self breast examination is a novel method for early detection of this cancer which in tern may improve the prospects for long-term survival. We conducted a study to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practice regarding Breast Self-Examination (BSE) in female medical students of the College of Health and Medical Sciences at Haramaya University. A cross sectional study was carried out in 126 female medical students from first year to internship of their medical study. Data were collected using a pre-tested structured self-administered quantitative questionnaire. All the participants had good knowledge about breast cancer and 95% of the participants believed that BSE can be an important tool for early detection of this cancer. About 85% participants agreed that early breast cancer detection improves survival. And 65% of students knew all three breast cancer screening methods viz. BSE, Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) and mammography. When it came to practice it was observed that 77% of the study participants have never done BSE, the main reasons behind this were, I don't have any problem (28.8%), forgetfulness (17.5%), and due to fear of detecting abnormality (16.4%). We conclude that despite of the adequate knowledge of BSE and breast cancer, the actual practice of BSE was very low (23%) among the medical students. We recommended that public awareness on the importance of BSE be intensified using the mass media and other means. Further studies are needed to explore what intervention could be best used to improve the uptake and practice of BSE and other methods for early breast cancer detection.

Comparative Study on the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Self Breast Examination and Breast Cancer Screening Between First and Second Class Women of Kitwe District

International Journal of Clinical Oncology and Cancer Research

Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in both developing and developed countries. One major contributor to high morbidity is late diagnosis which is due to lack of knowledge of the risk factors, causes, early signs and symptoms and simple screening tools like Self Breast Examination (SBE) and Clinical Breast Examination (CBE). The aim of this study was to compare level of knowledge of BC, CBE and SBE as well as attitude and practice towards CBE and SBE between women in rural and urban areas. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 women who were residents of Parklands (Urban area) and Kawama (Rural area). Equal numbers of women from each area were recruited into the study. All the 300 questionnaires were properly filled and returned. Data was entered and analysed in SPSS version 20.0 software. The majority of participants (34.3%) were between the age of 36 and 45 years and resided in Parklands (59.2%). All the participants (100%) had heard about CBE but only 87.3% of these respondents were able to explain correctly what it is (53.7% urban and 42.7% rural). Of all the respondents, 57.7% had heard about Self Breast Examination before the day of the interview. The most common source of information of CBE was 'friends' (77%). Furthermore, 49.7% of the subjects had good knowledge about BC and CBE, while 28% had poor knowledge. Of all the women, 45% had good knowledge about BSE while 53.7% had poor knowledge. In addition, 96.3% of the respondents showed good attitude toward CBE and 3.7% showed poor attitude. Level of education showed significant relationship with Practice of CBE (P-value: 0.00), Practice of SBE (P-Value: 0.00), level of knowledge of CBE (P-value: 0.00) and level of knowledge of SBE (P-Value: 0.00). Lastly, attitude towards CBE did not seem to show any significant relationship with practice of CBE (P-Value: 0.522). The findings of the study showed that most of rural than urban women had poor knowledge about BC, CBE and SBE. Educational programs on breast cancer and SBE should be conducted in print and electronic media using the local languages to reach out to the women in rural areas.

Awareness about Breast Cancer and Breast Self-Examination among Female Students at the University of Sharjah: A Cross-Sectional Study

Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention

Background: Breast cancer is a leading cause of mortality among women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Many young women in the UAE have poor knowledge about breast cancer screening, including risk factors and warning signs/symptoms. We investigated awareness about breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE) as a screening tool among female students at the University of Sharjah, UAE. Methods: This study used a cross sectional survey design. Participants were 241 undergraduate female students (aged ≥18 years) from three University of Sharjah campuses. Data were collected from March to April 2017 using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire covered: sociodemographic characteristics; knowledge about breast cancer, risk factors, and warning signs/symptoms; and knowledge and practice of BSE. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square tests. Results: About 38.6% of participants were from the Medical campus, 37.3% were from the Women's campus, and 24% were from the Fine Arts and Design campus. Most (99%) participants had heard of breast cancer. About 50% were knowledgeable about the risk factors, but only 38% were knowledgeable about warning signs/symptoms. The most commonly identified risk factors were family and personal histories of breast cancer, and the most commonly identified warning sign/symptom was breast lump. There was a significant association between knowledge about risk factors and campus type. Participants from the Medical campus were more knowledgeable about risk factors than participants from the other two campuses. Overall, 68.5% of participants had heard of BSE, but few participants actually performed BSE. Reasons for not performing BSE included "forgetting" and "not knowing how." Conclusions: Although most participants were aware of breast cancer, knowledge about risk factors and warning signs/symptoms was relatively poor. Knowledge about performing BSE was particularly low. This highlights the importance of increasing awareness about breast cancer and BSE among young women in the UAE.
