Better practices for recruiting T&E teachers

The declining number of Technology and Engineering (T&E) educators and teacher preparation programs across the country has been identified as a critical issue plaguing the field for many years (Daugherty, 1998; Volk, 1993). Unfortunately, this issue continues to progress and has raised concerns. Why should middle and high school T&E educators be concerned? The answer is simple: teachers have been identified as the most influential factor in encouraging students to pursue T&E education as a career. Without current educators helping universities to recruit future T&E teachers, many programs face the grim reality of closure for enrollment and budgetary reasons. This article presents 14 strategies supported by research and recent recruitment efforts that teachers should use to encourage students to become T&E educators.
Research in Practice: Preparing and Retaining K-12 STEM Teachers in High-Need School Districts
We investigated how participating in a STEM teacher recruitment program impacted undergraduate students’ decisions to pursue teaching and their self-reported preparation for teaching. We collected and analyzed survey and interview data from current and former participants of a University of California system-wide STEM teacher recruitment program called CalTeach. We found a significant relationship between undergraduates’ decision to pursue a career in teaching and the number of undergraduate education courses they completed. We also found that undergraduates who decided to pursue a career in teaching reported various ways that CalTeach influenced their decision. Undergraduates reported that participating in CalTeach reinforced or strengthened their decision to pursue teaching and that the classroom-based field experiences were especially helpful in shaping their decision. LaTechSTEP is a collaborative program between Louisiana Tech University faculty and high school teachers in the region. LaTechSTEP has two primary goals 1) to recruit new STEM majors to Louisiana Tech, and 2) to build relationships between the faculty and teachers. Through this program, high school students are brought on the university campus three times each year to explore a topic such as fuel cells. The high school math and science teachers of these students are brought on campus six times each year: three training workshops, and three times with the students. This paper will present several outcomes of Louisiana Tech University's LaTechSTEP program. This program was initially piloted during the 2005-06 academic year with one high school and has grown to twelve high schools during the 2011-12 academic year. In 2007, NSF funding was awarded for the further development of LaTechSTEP (#062462). Over 300 students and over 50 teachers from 17 high schools have participated in this program since its inception. The mechanics of the LaTechSTEP program have been presented in previous publications 1-5 ; therefore, only a brief overview of the program logistics will be presented in this paper. Instead, this paper will focus on the outcomes of the project and will quantify the effect of LaTechSTEP on STEM enrollment and on university faculty/high school teacher collaboration.
Early Recruitment of Science Teachers: Promising or Problematic Strategy
This study examines the experiences and knowledge of students who are participating in a recruitment course in a secondary science, mathematics, and computer science teacher education program. It looks at students who are participating in a recruitment course in a secondary science, mathematics, and computer science teacher education program at a large university. By examining the experiences and knowledge of students in such a program, it is possible to understand the disposition of students who elect to participate in these courses, and the curricular and instructional aspects that impact students who are considering the teaching profession. The findings provide an additional data source from which to draw conclusions, and thus have direct implications for those affiliated with similar courses. (Contains 3 tables.)
Teacher Recruitment: Predictive Factors of STEM University Students Entering the Teaching Profession

This study examines factors that influence science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) university students’ willingness to consider teaching as a career. Although very few of these students initially consider this profession, we identified four factors using predictive modeling that are strongly associated with these students’ willingness to consider teaching and their belief that teaching might be their best career option. Results indicated that STEM university students were more likely to consider teaching when they believed teaching is something they would be good at, others encouraged them to be a teacher, when family encourages them to teach, and when teachers they know inspire them. Results from this study indicate that small salary bonuses would likely not entice students in STEM subjects to become teachers. Teacher preparation programs are facing an alarming drop in enrollments around the country. Our university, The State University of New York at Albany, has not been exempted from decreased enrollments. Low enrollments have led us to initiate direct attempts to recruit quality applicants to our master’s programs. As part of our overall recruiting plan, we created a survey of our applicants to determine how they discovered our programs and why they want to attend our programs so that we can better utilize our limited advertising resources. A study determined critical attributes of the nation's exemplary, leading, or innovative (ELI) career-technical education teacher preparation programs. National experts identified 13 critical attributes of an ELI teacher preparation program. Researchers conducted site visits to 5 institutionsand used critical attributes as bases for structured interview protocols. The ELI institutions were often among those mentioned as the "most wired colleges". Institutional policies regarding computer support played a critical role in technology integration; faculty's willingness to adopt technology was an important factor. Students and faculty mentioned the rigor of field experiences and their important role in professional development. Teacher preparation and classroom practice were connected, and coursework had a congruent, well-planned sequence. Faculty members were active, high profile local and national researchers and authors. If You Build It, They Will Come (or Not): Going the Distance in Teacher Candidate Recruitment

There are persistent concerns in the literature related to recruitment and retention of highly qualified teacher candidates who are capable of achieving contemporary goals and meeting the professional expectations associated with the delivery of quality physical education programs in schools. The purpose of this article is to provide physical education teacher education faculty with recommendations for best practice in the area of teacher candidate recruitment by reviewing literature in the following areas: (a) identification of the characteristics of successful teachers as a basis for recruitment efforts, (b) fundamental principles of effective marketing and recruitment, (c) generational characteristics of college-bound students and the practical implications, and (d) recruitment of underrepresented populations. The recruitment tactics identified include actionable recommendations for faculty, departments/programs, universities, and community partners in teacher education.
