Improving Vocabulary Ability by Using Comic

The aims of this research are how to improve vocabulary using comic and how to motivate the students to apply it in their English. The research is guided by a conceptual framework leading to the use of comic through peer work to improve their motivation to speak English during the process of classroom communication interaction. The research method employs an action research. The subject consists of 20 students of the first grade of SMK Al Hidayah 1 Cilandak in 2015-2016 academic year. The research data is collected by using test (test after the first treatment and test after the second treatment) and by observation for collecting data on the students' motivation in improving vocabulary ability using series pictures. Data on vocabulary ability using comic was analysed by using descriptive and statistic analysis, to know the improvement in the student's mean score after the first cycle and the second cycle. Based on the first cycle, the students' average is 67.8, then, on the second treatment, the students' average increases to be 78.8. It can be concluded that teaching vocabulary using comic can improve students' vocabulary ability.

The Effectiveness of Comic Strip in Improving Students’ Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

The purpose of this study was to discover there was a substantial effect of using comic strips on students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMK Lab Business School Kota Tangerang. The researcher used a quantitative method. In this study, pre-experimental research one-group pre-test post-test was used with 40 students as the sample, which was taken at non-random. The instruments for data collection were vocabulary and reading comprehension tests. The data distribution was not normal, so the researcher used Wilcoxon Signed Rank to analyze it. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test vocabulary and reading comprehension results of the above pre-test and post-test data were 0.000 less than 0.05. The mean score for the pre-test vocabulary was 58.12 and the mean score for the post-test vocabulary was 78.63. The Use of Cartoon Movies to Enhance Students’ Vocabulary in Primary School

The research aims to identify whether or not and to what extent cartoon movies can enhance students' vocabulary mastery. The research also identifies the increasing of students' writing ability in writing short composition after taught by the movies. The Classroom Action Research conducted at fifth grade students of Syafana Islamic School, Gading Serpong, Tangerang. There were 2 cycles and each cycle consists of four steps, namely; (1) planning the action, (2) implementing the action, (3) observing the action, and (4) reflecting the result of the observation. The result of the research shows that cartoon movies can enhance the students' vocabulary mastery. It enhances students' writing ability in writing short composition after taught by the movies. It could be seen from these indicators: (a) students could spell the vocabularies; (b) most students were able to pronounce words correctly; (c) students could grasp the meaning well; and (d) students could use many vocabularies in their writing short composition. In line with the result, the writers suggest that cartoon movies are one of the effective techniques in English teaching activities. It increases the students' enthusiasm and their achievement in learning vocabulary and writing short composition ability. The result hopefully will motivate teachers to use cartoon movies in teaching vocabulary to young learners.

Online Comic in Mandarin Chinese’s Vocabulary Learning: A Case Study of Budi Utama Multilingual School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

This study was aimed to investigate 1) the improvement of CFL elementary-school students' skill in learning Mandarin Chinese (hereafter referred to as Mandarin) vocabulary through creating comic without online resources, creating online comics individually and collaboratively, 2) the CFL elementary-school students' attitude towards the application of comics in learning Mandarin vocabulary, and 3) the CFL elementary-school students' attitude towards the application of collaborative activities in learning Mandarin vocabulary. The research design was based on a quasi-experiment using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Three classes participated in this study: one class was the control group using text-based instruction without online resources; the other two classes were the experimental groups 1 and 2. In the experimental group 1, students worked individually on online comic whereas in the experimental group 2, students worked collaboratively on online comic. All participants were Grade 5 students of Budi Utama Multilingual School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The collected and analyzed data included performances on Mandarin vocabulary, in-class observation, questionnaires, and interview. In Mandarin vocabulary performances, the experimental group 2 outperformed the other two groups and the experimental group 1 performed better than the control group. In the students' attitude, the experimental group 2 behaved more positively than the two other groups, and the control group behaved more positively than the experimental group 1.

The Use of English Comic Book Series in Teaching Reading Comprehension

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not the use of English Comic Book series could improve reading comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 32 Palembang. In this study, one group pre-test and post-test control group design was applied. The population was 170 seventh grade students in academic year 2013/2014. Purposive sampling method was applied and class VII.1 (N=34) and class VII.2 (N=34) were involved as the sample. The data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean difference of the pre test and post test of the experimental group was significant (p < 0.05). The result of the independent sample t-test also showed that the mean differences of the post test of experimental group and control group were significant (p < 0.05). The Use of Comic to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension Skill at Junior High School

The objective of this experimental study is to know the achievement of students reading comprehension after implementing comic as learning media. The population was all of the eighth grade students of SMPN 17 Banda Aceh. The sample was the students of class VIII-9 (experimental class) and VIII-6 (control class). True Exprimental Design is used in this study. The writer conducted pre-test, treatment and post-test to collect data, and used gain score calculation. The mean score of pre-test in experimental class was 62 and post-test was 75.6, while the mean score of pre-test in control class was 36.8, and post-test was 59.2. The gain score of experimental class was 9.78, while control class was 8.11. It indicated that there was an improvement of students’ achievement both of classes. This study dealt with the use of two stay – two stay through manga on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Gebang on Jalan Medan – Pangkalan Berandan Kecamatan Gebang Kabupaten Langkat at eighth grade. The sample ware taken by using random sampling technique. Manga comics are known as interesting reading materials for students in learning. Due to the fact that intensive reading in English teaching and learning has many problems especially dealing with limited class time and uninteresting materials, teachers can develop manga comics as extensive reading materials to motivate students to read enthusiastically. The present paper reports the development of prototypes of manga comics as extensive reading materials for the tenth graders of senior high school. The research design was Research and Development. The setting was class X-1 in the academic year of 2012/2013 of SMA Negeri I Bojonegoro, East Java.
