Woven from the Soul, Spun from the Heart: Textile Arts of Safavid and Qajar Iran, 1987
Through analysis of pattern repeats in hand-woven carpets of Safavid and post-Safavid Iran, one may learn to distinguish the products of court and commercial production. From royal patronage of the 16th and 17th centuries, to the proliferation of regional carpet production in commercial centers, the social and economic conditions underlying carpet manufacture warrant further examination, particularly with reference to implications for design in the relationship of central field to borders, and repetition that results in patterns.

purchased between 1997 and 2005 by the then chairman of the country's National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage, Sheikh Saud bin Mohammad al-Thani, 1 a cousin of the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. During this period, the Qataris acquired some ninety classical and tribal carpets, kilims and textiles, 2 mostly from the 14th to early 18th centuries. 3 I was introduced to Sheikh Saud in 1997, when he had just begun seeking historical carpets for a new museum of Islamic art to be built in Qatar. 4 He was courteous, charming and engagingly enthusiastic. His first request was how to acquire a complete library of carpet books, his second was to see images of the greatest carpets still in private hands, and his third was to meet the owners with a view to buying these carpets for the museum. He was not interested in merely assembling a comprehensive collection of artefacts, but only wanted masterpieces.
