Image blur estimation based on the average cone of ratio in the wavelet domain
Wavelet Applications in Industrial Processing VI, 2009
In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for objective blur estimation using wavelet decomposition. The central idea of our method is to estimate blur as a function of the center of gravity of the average cone ratio (ACR) histogram. The key properties of ACR are twofold: it is powerful in estimating local edge regularity, and it is nearly insensitive to noise. We use these properties to estimate the blurriness of the image, irrespective of the level of noise. In particular, the center of gravity of the ACR histogram is a blur metric. The method is applicable both in case where the reference image is available and when there is no reference. The results demonstrate a consistent performance of the proposed metric for a wide class of natural images and in a wide range of out of focus blurriness. Moreover, the proposed method shows a remarkable insensitivity to noise compared to other wavelet domain methods.

Estimating image blur in the wavelet domain
… CONFERENCE ON ACOUSTICS …, 2002
In this paper, a wavelet based method is proposed to estimate the blur in an image using information contained in the image itself. We look at the sharpness of the sharpest edges in the blurred image, which contain information about the blurring. Specifically, a smoothness measure, the Lipschitz exponent, is computed for these sharpest edges. A relation between the variance of a gaussian point spread function and the magnitude of the Lipschitz exponent is shown, which is only dependent on the blur in the image and not on the image contents. This allows us to estimate the variance of the blur directly from the image itself.
Statistical Modeling of Perceptual Blur Degradation in the Wavelet Domain
2014 5th European Workshop on Visual Information Processing, 2014
To automatically detect blur in images, without needing to perform blur kernel estimation, we develop a new blur descriptor. It is modeled by image perceptual gradient statistics. As blurring affects especially edges, the proposed idea turns on extract specific statistical features from the perceptual edge map in the wavelet domain using the just noticeable blur concept (JNB). Extracted statistical features are used to robustly classify images as perceptually blurred or sharp using the support vector machines (SVM). The proposed descriptor performance is evaluated in terms of classification accuracy across different datasets. Obtained results revealed high correlation values of the proposed perceptual statistical features against subjective scores.
Blur Detection of Digital Images in Real-Time
2015
Image processing is a science that uncovers information about images. Enhancement of an image is necessary to improve appearance or to highlight the specific information contained in the image. With the prevalence of digital cameras, the number of digital images increases quickly, which raises the demand for image quality assessment in terms of blur. Applications like Satellite communication and Medical imaging involves real time capturing of high definition images. If the image in such applications is corrupted or the information conveyed is not clear, it is necessary to recapture appropriate image. A model is required that recaptures image automatically if distortion is involved in the captured image. Based on the edge type and sharpness analysis using Haar wavelet transform, a new blur detection scheme is been proposed in this paper. This scheme could determine the presence of blur in an image and also estimate the extent of blur in the image. Analysis is carried out for both, da...
Blur detection for digital images using wavelet transform
2004 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) (IEEE Cat. No.04TH8763)
With the prevalence of digital cameras, the number of digital images increases quickly, which raises the demand for image quality assessment in terms of blur. Based on the edge type and sharpness analysis using Harr wavelet transform, a new blur detection scheme is proposed in this paper, which can determine whether an image is blurred or not and to what extent an image is blurred. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
Wavelet-based blind blur reduction
Signal, Image and Video Processing, 2014
This paper presents a blind iterative algorithm for blurred image restoration. Herein, an optical blur kernel is considered. The proposed deblurring approach performs in the wavelet domain. It is relying on the wavelet details analysis and correction through resolutions. A qualitymetric-based stopping criterion is proposed to control the iterative correction process. The main advantage of the proposed technique lies in the fact that it is fully automatic and both the iterative correction process and the stopping criterion are based on the same transform. Tests using blurred images from the LIVE 2008 database show the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive algorithm.
A SURVEY ON EFFICIENT NO-REFERENCE BLUR ESTIMATION METHODS
Blur estimation in image processing has come to be of great importance in assessing the quality of images. This work presents a survey of no-reference blur estimation methods. A no-reference method is particularly useful, when the input image used for blur estimation does not have an available corresponding reference image. This paper provides a comparison of the methodologies of four no-reference blur estimation methods. The first method applies a scale adaptive technique of blur estimation to get better accuracy in the results. The second blur metric involves finding the energy using second order derivatives of an image using derivative pair of quadrature filters. The third blur metric is based on the kurtosis measurement in the discrete dyadic wavelet transform (DDWT) of the images. The fourth method of blur estimation is obtained by finding the ratio of sum of the edge widths of all the detected edges to the total number of edges. The results provided are useful in comparing the methods based on metrics like Spearman correlation coefficient. The results are obtained by evaluation on images from the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE) database. The various methods are evaluated on the images by adding varying content of noise. The performance is evaluated for 3 different categories namely Gaussian blur, motion blur and also JPEG2000 compressed images. Blur estimation finds its application in quality assessment, image fusion and auto-focusing in images. The sharpness of an image can also be found from the blur metric as sharpness is inversely proportional to blur. Sharpness metrics can also be combined with other metrics to measure overall quality of the image.
Multi-resolution Blur Effect Characterization: Comparative Study
This paper investigates the best way to analyze blur effect in images. Many studies prove that using multi-resolution analysis improves the analysis efficiency by using edges persistence throughout multi-resolution representation. This paper turns on the best way to perform this multi-resolution analysis. Herein two multiresolution representations are considered: the linear Discrete Wavelet Transform DWT and the the non linear Multiplicative Multiresolution Decomposition MMD. Features are extracted in the both normalized transforms and are used to classify images into three classes (no blurred, blurred and very blurred images). These both approaches have been tested on LIVE Gblur Database. Results show clearly that blur effect is efficiently characterized by MMD's features.
Estimation of Image Focus Measure and Restoration by Wavelet
2011
We present image focus measure which is based on wavelet transform of the image. A wavelet based method is proposed to estimate the blur in an image using information contained in the image itself. This image degradation obscures part of the information present in the image. The goal of image restoration, is to recover this information as good as possible. In this paper we propose a robust technique for image focus measure based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT). We suggest the absolute sum of the second-level detailed image of DWT as focus measure. We analysed this measure is monotonic with respect to the degree of defocusation.
