The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic is not limited to human lives and health sectors. It has also changed social and economic aspects of the world. This study investigated the Islamic stock market’s reaction and changes in volatility before and during this pandemic. The market model of event study methodology was employed to analyze Islamic stock market reactions in nine different markets around the globe. To examine changes in volatility and persistence of risk, the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) method was used. Nine Islamic stock indices were selected for this study from the Thomson Reuters data stream. The results suggest that, in the short run, the Islamic Australian stock index and Islamic GCC stock index remained stable for the first 15 days following news of the pandemic. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of market anomalies (days of the week), political shocks, and COVID-19 on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The analysis employs dummy variables for capturing the effects of the variables i.e., days of the week, political shocks, and COVID-19. Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model was used for the empirical research of the volatility of stock returns by using a sample period of daily data from 11 January 2016 to 30 April 2021. Result showed that Friday had a negative, and Wednesday had a significant positive impact on stock returns. While Monday, Tuesday and Thursday were found insignificant. The Islamic stock index is a composite index of Islamic stocks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Therefore, is expected to have low volatility and be resistant to a possible financial crisis. This study aims to see whether the volatility of the Islamic stock index is lower than the conventional stock index during the Covid-19 crisis. The data taken is daily stock closing data for JKSE and JII for the period March 1, 2020, to April 30, 2022, with a total of 532 observations. The model used is ARMA/ ARIMA which is then followed by the ARCH – GARCH volatility model. The Asymmetric Volatility of the Islamic Capital Market During the COVID-19 Pandemic

This study attempts to identify the existence of asymmetric volatility in the Islamic capital market in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. The paper employs the symmetric analysis of the GARCH (1,1) model and the asymmetric analysis of the TGARCH (1,1) model in order to identify Islamic capital market behaviour during the first 200 days after the first Covid-19 cases were confirmed. We used the daily closing prices of the Indonesia Sharia Stock Index (ISSI). The symmetric analysis of the GARCH (1,1) model revealed that the current value of return on the ISSI does not have a significant impact on its future value. On the other hand, the TGARCH (1,1) model showed that the asymmetric parameter coefficient was positive and statistically significant. The objectives of this research are to study Islamic stock indexes during the time of Covid-19 extensively and compare it with conventional stock indexes. Our research aims to analyse how stock returns indexes of Islamic and conventional have been affected by COVID-19. So, in other word, the research objected to analyse the effect of COVID-19 on the returns and volatility of Islamic and conventional stocks indexes by using ARIMA-X and EGARCH-X models. In keeping with this objective, the Islamic and conventional stocks indexes were used to estimate the financial stock return, and the dummy variable as of number of everyday cases of each country was used to estimate the effect of COVID-19. The research investigates the levels of uncertainty and volatility in Islamic and conventional stock indexes prior to and during the Covid-19 crisis. Additionally, it compares Islamic stock markets with others and analyses the impact of the pandemic on these markets. The findings reveal statistically significant results, with certain indexes demonstrating significance at levels of 10%, 5%, and 1%. By overall looking we can say that Nigerian indexes were affected the most among others which include the Islamic and the conventional, moreover the least affected by the uncertainty was in Indonesia and Malaysia and the Islamic indexes in general were better. We can conclude that Islamic stock indexes were affected like others by the COVID-19.
Pandemic Attack and Islamic Stocks Index: A Cross Country Analysis

The impact of Covid-19 has triggered the current global economic downturn affecting all aspects of the economy including the Islamic stock index. This study aims to determine the model for forecasting the index. The Islamic stock index is used in six countries through adopting the Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity-Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH-GARCH) method on daily data over the period January 2020 to October 2020. The risk level of each index was found to be influenced by the residual value from the previous day. The forecasting revealed the tendency of all stock prices to decline. These are associated with impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on current and future economic performance. Investors need to assess the sector's fundamentals and the individual stocks in question, that are potential winners with propensity to recover and grow well once the market rebounds. They also need to continuously track the development of the pandemic in tandem with the economic sector and thus make the necessary adjustments at every step of the investment process.
INVESTIGATING VOLATILITY BEHAVIOUR: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM ISLAMIC STOCK INDICES

The main purpose of this research is to apply five univariate GARCH models to the daily stock returns of four major sharia stock indices. Two symmetric versions of the GARCH model (GARCH and MGARCH) and three asymmetric versions (EGARCH, TGARCH and PGARCH) are employed to estimate and forecast the volatility of four major sharia indices. The results provide strong evidence that all models can depict the volatility behaviours in all four sharia index returns. The two symmetric models indicate that the volatility of a sharia index's returns depend on its previous own lags, and statistically prove that a rise in volatility (risk) leads to an increase in mean (return), i.e. the risk premium effect. Meanwhile, the three asymmetric models suggest that negative shocks to daily returns tend to have higher impact on the volatility of sharia indices than positive shocks of the same magnitude. Moreover, based on the values of forecasting errors-root mean square errors (RMSE) and mean absolute errors (MAE)-the asymmetric GARCH models outperform the symmetric models in forecasting the volatility of four major sharia indices. However, the very small difference values of RMSE and MAE among the univariate GARCH-type models denote that no single model is superior to the others.
