The role of push and pull factors in the way tourists choose their destination
The current research aims at examining the difference between the trip-related motivations held by those tourists who choose recreational destinations and those who choose cultural ones. To do so, in August 2013, 401 questionnaires were handed to Iranian tourists planning to take a trip to Istanbul and Antalya, Turkey. The results of the t-tests demonstrated that those tourists considering escape to be their major motivation for the trip tended to travel to tourist resorts more, and the recreational goal of the destination played the most significant role for them. On the other hand, those who travel for ego-enhancement try to practice more cultural destinations and place great value on tourist attractions.

Relations of tourist push and pull motivations with their activities: the case of Lithuania
International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning
Relations of touRist push and pull motivations with theiR activities: the case of lithuania Rasuole andRuliene, aida maceRinskiene, & sigitas uRbonavicius vilnius university, lithuania. abstRact tourist motivations are typically grouped into push and pull categories, and this classification is helpful for numerous analytical purposes. the objective of this study is to analyze how push and pull motivations are related with tourist activities in a destination country. typically, pull motivations trigger tourist involvement in activities that are closely related with these motivations (like culture-related motivations with culture-related activities; nature-related motivation with nature-related activities, etc.). however, this is much less obvious in case of push motivations, since there are few activities that could be directly linked with the latter. the identified research gap needs to be explored. possible tourist activities in a visited country are often rather typical; however, more specific preferences are influenced by the specifics of a destination, travel programme concepts and other characteristics of a particular trip. this makes the analysis of the relationship between motivations and activities relevant to broad contexts, but also allows one to include specifics of an analysed country. the study analyses a relation of push and pull motivations with tourist activities in lithuania on the basis of a tourist survey that includes 374 respondents from 47 countries. the analysis is concentrated on linking four motivations (pull: nature-related and culture-related; push: escape and self-confidence increase) with three types of activities: culture-related activities, prestige-related activities and entertainment. also, the age of tourists is used as an additional predictor in the regression analysis. the findings reveal that nature-related motivation has no significant relation with analyzed activities; culture-related motivations influence culture-related and prestige-related activities. push motivations influence both prestige-related activities and entertainment. age is a significant predictor for all the three activities; however, in case of entertainment the relation is negative. this adds to the current scope of scientific knowledge about predictors of the analysed types of tourist activities and has practical implications for the development of sustainable tourism.
This research paper aimed to identify travel motivation by push and pull factors that affected decision making of international tourists in selecting Thailand as their destination choice. A total of 200 international tourists who traveled to Thailand during January and February, 2014 were used as the sample in this study. A questionnaire was employed as a tool in collecting the data, conducted in Bangkok. The list consisted of 30 attributes representing both psychological factors as "push-based factors" and destination factors as "pull-based factors". Mean and standard deviation were used in order to find the top ten travel motives that were important determinants in the respondents' decision making process to select Thailand as their destination choice. The finding revealed the top ten travel motivations influencing international tourists to select Thailand as their destination choice included [i] getting experience in foreign land; [ii] Thai food; [iii] learning new culture; [iv] relaxing in foreign land; [v] wanting to learn new things; [vi] being interested in Thai culture, and traditional markets; [vii] escaping from same daily life; [viii] enjoying activities; [ix] adventure; and [x] good weather.

TRAVEL MOTIVATIONS AND DESTINATION SELECTION: A CRITIQUE
Tourists’ motivation is studied by researchers to understand their behavior and the decision-making process. It is noted that behavior of tourists is mainly influenced by various factors such as cultural backgrounds, social influences, perception, personality, economic situations, education etc. Travel motive is the starting points of the decision making process (Crompton and McKay, 1997). When planning a trip, it is necessary to answer the questions such as “why do we/they travel?”, “where to go?”, “which is the most suitable…? “when to go?, and “how?” etc. Various theories and concepts have been developed and tested to reveal the travel motives, but yet there are contradictions. Objective of this study is to critically review and discuss the theories and concepts in general and tourist motivations in particular. Further, this study develops a research framework for Sri Lanka on tourist motivation and elaborates implication on future researches on consumer motivation in tourism and hospitality. The study categorized the theories found on tourism motivation into push and pull motives, escaping and seeking and need theories etc. Finally, the emphasis placed on fundamental facts behind behavior and decision making in line with assessment of perception and satisfaction aspects on post purchasing and potential behavior.
