Urban Morphological Transformation of Riverfront Communities in the Nakhon Chaisri Basin, Thailand
MANUSYA, 2018
The main objectives of this study were to analyze the urban morphological transformation of riverfront communities in agricultural areas in the Nakhon Chaisri river basin based on a spatial configuration model following the Theory of Urban Morphology and to compare their transformations from the past to present. The theory of urban morphology was used to create a pattern of transportation networks and open spaces on geographical maps; moreover, a field survey, interviews and a review of related literature were included. According to the analysis, the basin has undergone three noticeable phases of development as follows: 1) plantation-rice field-orchard areas encompassing the riverfront communities (1858–1957), 2) urban communities taking over plantation-rice field-orchard areas (1958–1992) and 3) urban sprawl (1993–present). Construction of roads and more buildings is the main reason for a change in the ecology and the spatial configuration of this area. Furthermore, three riverfron...
River Basin and Land Use Lessons from Bangkok, Thailand
Disaster Risk Reduction
The urban development of Bangkok has focused on the promotion of internal economic growth and citizen's livelihood such as that found in many cities of the Global South. Infrastructure development and economic development have always been the center of Bangkok's urban development policy and planning. As a result, incorporating the possible risks that could occur from the impacts of climate change into its urban development policies has sometimes been overlooked. In the past decade, the city has changed from a compact urban core into a metropolis. Bangkok acts as Thailand's political, economic, and administrative capital, but has also risen into a regional and global hub. Geographically, the city has extended from its original downtown area to incorporate its fi ve neighboring provinces to form a single agglomeration. Bangkok is the largest city within Thailand, where approximately 15 % of the country's population resides in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Despite the city's economic and demographic vibrancy, Bangkok is highly disposed to climate change and various environmental issues. The city is susceptible to inundation as, geographically, the city lies on low-lying planes of 1.0-2.0 m and regularly receives water from runoff, rain, and seawater. Thailand often uses the comprehensive plan as a land management tool in conjunction with the city planning code for land utilization. The aim of the comprehensive plan and its regulatory framework is solely to limit urban development. (A) Parts of this book chapter were used as a background paper prepared for the Global Assessment

The objective of this research was to study the land-use patterns through the Landsat satellite image perspective in order to see the spatio-temporal development of coastal tourist city in Takua Pa District, Phang-Nga Province, Thailand. The study found that there is a noticeable land-use change in the cassiterite (tin) mining area that has declined over the past 50 years, from 1973 appearing 55.82 km2 (9.68%) until the current year 2022 without remaining, as it has been transformed into an agricultural area where rubber, palm, and coconut are planted. In addition, the mining area has become an urban area and buildings such as hotels and resorts, and a water source for shrimp farms. It can be seen that Landsat satellite imagery is very useful for land-use planning, especially in the coastal tourist city area. The results of this research can be classified as a spatial database for tourism planning in Takua Pa community by zoning into 3 areas for major tourism, Zone-1 Eco Tourism, Zo...
The Urban Image Conservation and Development of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Old Town Community in Thailand
Nakhara : Journal of Environmental Design and Planning
Nakhon Si Thammarat Old Town Community dated a thousand years old from four eras of settlement development. The community is located on an ancient beach ridge that stands until the present day. It also has an image of a community that is unique to any city. Today the community is rapidly expanding, so the importance of the old town’s various elements has been diminished. The research objectives are to analyze Nakhon Si Thammarat Old Town Community’s image and landscape and provide suggestions to preserve and develop the community’s image. The methodology is theoretical concepts of the image of the city, urban landscape, historic urban landscape, and urban conservation, including field surveys to identify problems and the community’s awareness. Visual assessments and mapping were also undertaken. Based on the study, the urban conceptual framework emphasizes the five elements of physical perception, whereas the cultural landscape concept focuses on the physical perception of the commu...
Delta areas are the primary places that need to be observed regularly and consistently because they are the most important ecological and economic values in the coastal regions. In this study, the changes in land cover and usage features of Küçük Menderes River delta resulting from particularly anthropogenic impacts in the last period of 30 years were determined by using methods and techniques of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS). The satellite images of 1984 and 2014 were used in the study. The natural characteristics of the coast were disturbed by the invasion of settlements in coastal areas especially in the plain field. This increase in the settlement areas causes contraction in agricultural lands and forest areas. Therefore, it is necessary to make a sustainable planning by considering the geomorphologic structure of the plain mainly the coastal zone. Key Words: Land Use, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Coastal Change, Küçük Menderes River Delta, Remote Sensing (RS).

Like other natural resources, water can be mobilized for wealth generation. The spatial expression of land resources and of the natural water regime, in terms of quantity, quality, timing, variability and availability (or easiness to divert or abstract), coupled with the distribution of power in society, defines and underpins the early development of river basins and the pattern of control over water.

In Asia's emerging countries, urbanization occurs along with the fast population growth that follows the phenomenon of rapid economic development and centralization of industries and population into mega-cities. A typical example of this type of centralization can be seen in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, Thailand. In this study, the latest high resolution satellite remote sensing images, as well as the existing GIS data, were integrated to generate temporal (1994, 2000, and 2009) land use/cover maps that could be used to understand the recent expansion process of urban areas and the spatial variations of rural agricultural landscapes in the suburbs. These maps showed that the proportion of urban/built-up area has been increasing,

Because of their intense vegetation and the fact that they include areas of coastline, deltas situated in the vicinity of big cities are areas of greet attraction for people who wish to get away from in a crowded city. However, deltas, with their fertile soil and unique flora and fauna, need to be protected. In order for the use of such areas to be planned in a sustainable way by local authorities, there is a need for detailed data about these regions. In this study, the changes in land use of the Balçova Delta, which is to the immediate west of Turkey's third largest city Izmir, from 1957 up to the present day, were investigated. In the study, using aerial photographs taken in 1957, 1976 and 1995 and an IKONOS satellite image from the year 2005, the natural and cultural characteristics of the region and changes in the coastline were determined spatially. Through this study, which aimed to reveal the characteristics of the areas of land already lost as well as the types of land use in the Balçova delta and to determine geographically the remaining areas in need of protection, local authorities were provided with the required data support. Balçova consists of flat and fertile wetland with mainly citrus-fruit orchards and flower-producing green houses. The marsh and lagoon system situated in the coastal areas of the delta provides a habitat for wild life, in particular birds. In the Balçova Delta, which provides feeding and resting for migratory birds, freshwater sources are of vital importance for fauna and flora. The settlement area, which in 1957 was 182 ha, increased 11-fold up to the year 2005 when it reached 2,141 ha. On the other hand, great losses were determined in farming land, olive groves, forest and in the marsh and lagoon system. This unsystematic and rapid urbanization occurring in the study region is not only causing the loss of important agricultural land and wetland, but also lasting water and soil pollution.
Landscape Change Analysis: Ecosystem Services in the Peri-urban Agriculture of Bangkok
Journal of Architectural/Planning Research and Studies (JARS)
Over the past decades, Bangkok peri-urban has been transformed from agricultural villages to urban development communities. Within the flat terrain and poor drainage characteristic of Chao Phraya Lower Floodplain, peri-urban agricultures are considered to be one of landscape patches and areas that creating and adding ecosystem services and values for mega urban areas. The significant loss of agricultural landscape of Bangkok peri-urban means that the loss of seasonal water retention areas, productive landscapes, as well as habitat for urban wildlife. This research classifies and analyzes landscape transformations especially agricultural landscape structures and functions of eight selective sites surrounded by the urban fringe of Bangkok. By tracing over the landscape change patterns backs form 1952 to 2018, the study areas include; 1) Rangsit Klong Sam and Klong Si, Pathumthani 2) Bang Kradi, Patumthani, 3) Lum Lukka Klong Hok Wa, Patumthani, 4) Klong Chorakea Noi and Klong Lat Krab...
