The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire: Further psychometric validation and clinical implications of the French version in normal weight and obese persons

La Presse Médicale, 2015

Objectives > This study tested the psychometric properties of the French version of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) for normal weight and obese patients; determined the factors associated with each DEBQ score: emotional eating (eating in response to emotional arousal states such as fear, anger or anxiety), externality (eating in response to external food cues such as sight and smell of food), and restrained eating behavior/cognitive restraint (conscious efforts to limit and control dietary intake); and determined how to interpret the results from this scale to guide clinical practice. Methods > Between January 2009 and April 2009, we assessed non-paired normal weight persons (n = 74) and all consecutive obese patients consulting in the Nutrition Ward of the University Hospital of Tours (n = 75; including bariatric surgery patients) using the DEBQ. We tested the scale's factor structure using a factor analysis for ordinal data and internal consistency for each DEBQ dimension. Results > Our results supported a three-factor structure for both normal weight and obese patients. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients were excellent for emotional eating and externality (a ! 0.90) and good for cognitive restraint (a ! 0.81). The emotional eating and cognitive restraint scores

The adaptation of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire – psychometric properties in a polish sample

Current Psychology, 2019

The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) contains three scales which assess emotional, external and restrained eating styles that may contribute to or attenuate the development of overweight. The main goal of this study was to adapt and investigate the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the DEBQ. A sample of 785 Polish adults answered the questionnaire. Confirmatory Factor Analyses were used to evaluate the factor structure of the DEBQ. Next, the measurement invariance of the DEBQ across gender and BMI-status was assessed. Reliabilities were estimated with Cronbach's alpha and 4-week retest. Additionally, the convergent validity of the DEBQ was examined with the Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26), assessing individuals' attitudes towards eating behaviours and eating disorders. The results showed that the internal structure was similar to the theoretical proposal. It indicated that the three-factor structure had the best fit to the data, and this dimensional structure proved to be invariant across sex and BMI-status. The reliability estimates were satisfactory (all ≥ .70). Finally, convergent validity of the DEBQ was supported by significant relationships of its subscales to measures of the EAT-26. The DEBQ presented high crosslanguage replicability and seems to be an effective instrument for research in Polish adults.

Validation of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) in a sample of Spanish women

Appetite, 2014

The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) was developed to measure eating styles that may contribute to or attenuate the development of overweight. It comprises three scales that measure emotional, external and restrained eating. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the internal structure of the Spanish version of the DEBQ using updated psychometric techniques in a sample of women. A sample of 647 Spanish females answered the questionnaire. Both exploratory structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analysis were used to evaluate the factor structure of the DEBQ. Reliabilities were estimated with Cronbach's alpha. The relations between the subscales of the DEBQ and age, BMI, and scores on the Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT) and the Restrained Scale-Revised (RS) were computed with Pearson correlations. Results showed that the internal structure was similar to the theoretical proposal, although items associated with boredom and idleness presented cross-loading problems. The reliability estimates were satisfactory. The Emotional and External Eating factors correlated with the BMI, and External Eating was negatively correlated with age. The Restraint factor of the DEBQ showed significant relationships with scales of the EAT-26 and RS. The dimensional validity of the DEBQ is reproduced in a Spanish sample, and the DEBQ seems to be an effective instrument for research in Spanish females. Minor modifications to the DEBQ are recommended.

One year reliability of the Dutch eating behavior questionnaire: an extension into clinical population

Journal of Public Health, 2019

Aim Previous research introduced the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire that allows the measurement of emotional, external and restrained eating styles. However, only limited data exist about long-term test-retest reliability, particularly for clinical participants. Subjects and methods The current study evaluated the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire 12-month test-retest reliability and internal consistency using the responses of 494 participants (241 pre-bariatric participants and 253 normal-weight controls). Results Internal consistency remained acceptable for each group at both time points. Cronbach's α ranged from 0.81 (restrained eating at time 1 in pre-bariatric group) to 0.94 (external eating at time 1 in normal-weight group). Also, the stability estimates were satisfactory and ranged from 0.79 (restrained eating in pre-bariatric group) to 0.92 (external eating in normal-weight group). Conclusion It is concluded that the internal consistency of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire is excellent, and that the testretest reliability results suggest that items intended to measure three types of eating styles were likely testing trait, rather than state, factors, regardless of whether normal-weight controls were included in, or excluded from, the analyses. Finally, the measurement invariance of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire across body mass index status was assessed. It indicated that the three-factor structure had the best fit to the data, and this dimensional structure proved to be invariant across body mass index status.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating: is the DEBQ-external eating scale a valid measure of external eating?

The International journal of eating disorders, 2011

To test the construct validity and discriminative validity of the widely used Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire's (DEBQ) External Eating (EE) subscale. After being exposed to food cues or not participants completed a bogus taste test. Subjective cue reactivity during food exposure and actual food intake after food exposure were measured. EE scores were unrelated to food intake. A robust main effect of food cue exposure was found but contrary to what was predicted, low EE scorers ate more after food cue exposure than without whereas high EE scorers did not. The actual eating behavior of high and low scorers on the other DEBQ subscales - emotional and restrained eating - demonstrated that the EE also lacks discriminative validity. The EE showed no predictive validity and no discriminative validity. The usefulness of the distinction of different types of concerned eaters is questioned.

The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18 is able to distinguish among different eating patterns in a general population

The Journal of nutrition, 2004

A revised version of the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) was developed in an obese population, but its applicability to the general population was not assessed. We aimed to define the relationship between eating behavior and reported food intake. This was a cross-sectional study of 529 middle-aged adults and 358 teenagers and young adults recruited on a geographical basis. The TFEQ-R18 measures 3 aspects of eating behavior: cognitive restraint (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE), and emotional eating. Reported food intake was calculated from a food frequency questionnaire. Girls who scored higher on restrained eating had a lower energy intake than the other girls (9164 kJ vs. 13,163 kJ, P < 0.001). In adult men, energy intake increased with UE (9663 kJ vs. 11,029 kJ in the lower and higher UE tertiles, respectively, P < 0.05). When specific food groups were analyzed, higher CR was positively associated in adults with healthy food groups like green vegetables [OR = 1.92 (0....

Italian version of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Psychometric proprieties and measurement invariance across sex, BMI-status and age

Appetite, 2013

The purpose of this study was to examine the basic psychometric proprieties of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) and its measurement invariance across sex, BMI-status (normal weight/overweight), and age in a community sample of 990 Italian adults. The analysis of the dimensionality of the DEBQ using exploratory factor analysis revealed the existence of three major factors-emotional, restrained and external eating. Single and multi-group confirmatory factor analyses replicated the three-factor structure, and this dimensional structure proved to be invariant across sex, BMI-status, and age. Findings upheld the criterion-related validity (e.g., via its associations with Eating Attitudes Test-26). The DEBQ's subscales displayed high internal consistency and test-retest reliability over a 4week period. Statistically significant differences were found when sex, BMI and age groups are compared in the latent means of emotional, external and restrained eating and they are discussed with reference to theory, past and recent empirical findings. Overall, results support the measurement invariance of the DEBQ and suggest that the Italian version is a psychometrically reliable, valid and useful measurement instrument for assessing adult eating behaviors.

Eating behaviors in a male and female community sample: psychometric properties of the DEBQ

Terapia psicológica, 2017

the aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Dutch eating Behavior Questionnaire (DeBQ) in a community sample of chilean adults. the sample comprised 627 participants who completed a battery of questionnaires. the mean age of the sample was 36.07 years (sD =12.49), and 66.2% of them were women. Mean body mass index (BMi) was 25.61 kg/m 2 (sD =4.20). item analysis suggested that one item yielded very low corrected item-total correlation. the internal structure analysis revealed that the threefactor model showed a good fit. Internal structure was adequate. A gender effect was found in DEBQ scores, and there was a positive significant association between BMI and DEBQ scores. The correlation analysis supported the adequate convergent validity of the scale. the present study provides evidence to support the adequate reliability and validity of the DeBQ when applied in a chilean population.
